77 Trans AM
« on: June 15, 2011, 10:55:25 AM »
I was looking at the production numbers on here, and my 77 trans am is not listed. What does that mean? The first part of my VIN is: 2W87ZTN.

Jeff,

I think he's referring to the "T" in his VIN. I'd wager that "T" is really  a "7" to denote the model year.

Sorry it is a 7. But in the breakdown in the production numbers. It doesn't list "W87".

Yeah, saw that also Brian.

"W87" is just part of the VIN....not an engine designation like "W72" or "L80", etc.

OK Thanks. Sorry I don't know too much about this car. My dad had it and started to restore it, and now he doesn't want it so I'm trying to sell it.

W = Trans Am
87 = coupe

Gotta separate out the various components of your VIN.

Decoding the part you listed:

2 =Pontiac
W = Trans Am
87 = Coupe
Z = Pontiac 400
7 = 1977
N = Norwood, OH plant

Seems like it all checks out to me ;)

BTW: You'll learn a lot more from either the Build Sheet (if you're lucky enough to have the original) OR from paying the $$ and getting the info from PHS. Most buyers want either of these forms of documentation when buying a car. It's a level of verification so that they know you're not trying to pass off a regular Trans Am as a Special Edition car.

No problem.

Post some pictures of your car and I'm sure a few knowledgeable guys/gals will offer up a general idea of where to start your listing at. It will also help us help you list what was original to the car and what might have been added after the fact by a 3rd party.

I can post the pictures later this afternoon. How do I tell if it is the original engine and other items? I don't know how many owners had it before my dad.

You can verify if it is the original engine by looking at the partial VIN stamping on the engine block...info shown here:

*Supposedly* PA titles are stamped with the number of previous owners. I was told this by the guy I bought the 80 firebird from. I no longer have the PA title to the 80 firebird as its now titled in NY.

I'd suggest checking with the DMV/BMV in PA to determine *if* the titles are indeed marked this way. I believe though the PA title would only include PA owners so if the car spent time titled in OH (for example) that those owner(s) wouldn't be captured on the PA title.
