1969 Trans Am
« on: February 05, 2009, 01:02:24 PM »
Ok here is the deal.  When I was in high shcool, about 6 or 8 years ago, I went to a guys house to see a few old cars he had.  We walked around his property and he showed me what he had and were talking afterwords and he told me his dad had a old camaro sitting in a barn.  He asked if i wanted to see it and I said, "sure".  We walked up to this old barn and inside is sitting a 1969 T/A,  All original, 400 cid, automatic, ram air.  He told me his dad had bought it brand new and raced it on the street for years.  I asked around town to some of the old school racers and they said that the dad did have the car back in the day.  I asked him if he would want to get rid of it and he said no.  I said BS, everythings for sale.  He told me that his dad said someone would have to show up with $10,000 cash.  Which was alot to me then.  So now, several years later I began to think about the 69' t/a sitting in the barn.  Me and my wife drove out to where it was sitting years ago and it was still sitting in the same spot.  I have done some research on the car and it is very rare but I am just wondering "how much" it is really worth.  It needs completely restored now but it is still in decent shape.  Thanks for any help.

A true (and original) '69 T/A is pretty rare, since only 689 hardtops (and 8 ragtops) were produced.

I'd say it's easily worth $10K if it's in original and restorable condition...assuming the moisture from years of barn storage hasn't completely rotted the frame/chassis beyond repair.

Pictures would definitely help.

It is an automatic car.  There were only 123 out of the 689 coupes produced came with an automatic.  I wanna try and get some pics but the people are very picky about anyone around their property.  I dont think they would let me get close enough to get the vin or anything.  The last thing I wanna do is anger them and ruin any chances I do have of getting the car.  You can see the front of the car from the porch of their house so I might be able to get one there.  The rear quarters are just starting to bubble and it has been sitting for maybe 10 years.  It has been in the barn/machine shed out of the weather since they parked it.

Does anyone know how to tell the differance between the Ram Air HO and the Ram Air IV?

That would actually be Ram Air III and Ram Air IV.  As I recall, the RA III intake is cast iron, while the RA IV would be aluminum, but someone will chime in to make sure I am right on that.

Well the guy told me that his dad had a differant cam and carb installed by the dealer whenever he bought it.  I dont know if that means anything and he may just be running his mouth too.  Whats the exact differances between the Ram Air III and Ram Air IV.  The people dont REALLY know what it is or what its worth.  They just think should be worth alot cause it is a classic car, not because it is a T/A.

I don't think it is worth the $10,000 at all.  In fact, if you want to give me the guys phone number to call him and buy the car from him so I can steal it from you.... I mean call him and explain to him that the car is not worth $10.00 I will.

i love the found in a barn story,it would be neat if you could get it brought and restore it,it is a shame to let such a rare car rot away.

I love hearing about the "barn finds".   When I'm out driving the back roads down here, I'm always checking out the yards of houses.  If that is a true 69 T/A, it would be a hell of a find.  I hope you are able to get it!!  Keep us informed, I'll be watching for this thread ;D

I wonder if he had the cam and stuff replaced at the factory do you think there is any chance that could have the ram air V heads on it or were they not available in 1969.  That would be a dream come true to have a set of ram air V heads.

That's gonna' make it pretty tricky to try and buy the car if they won't even allow you to look it over  :D :D

The guy is getting pretty old now, and you can tell by looking at the place that the people could use the money.  I found a lil info and they made 123 automatic T/A's.  114 were Ram Air III and 9 were Ram Air IV.  I found out what the codes are and where they are on the block to tell the differance between the two.  I was just curious cause there is only a 10 hp differance between R.A.III and R.A.IV.  Cam and carb sound like somewhat likely canidates for differances between them, or heads, intake, carb.  Its probally just wish full thinking but you never know.  I am think I could get in to take some pics and get the VIN whenever I talk to the owners son, I just wanna know what are key details to look for if I am able to get close to it.  I am on an "at any cost" mission to get the car and my wife fully backs me so...  I talked to the owners nephew the other day when I went to see if the car was still there and he was the one that asked if I went up and looked at it.  I told him no and asked if I could and he told me to wait and have the son take me to look at it.  Any way Thanks for the input.  I will keep you all posted.

Ohh yeah.  There is a Bandit Edition T/A around here.  It had the factory motor and tranny but the motor had spun a bearing and had been pulled, but was still with the car.  The body was in good shape, other than a few dings.  The last time I heard about it they wanted $400 for it.  There is also a 68 or 69 Coronet R/T 440 sitting up in the woods about 30 minutes from my house, but I am not a mopar fan so...

lol yeah, if you are interested in them.  I will see what I can find.  About 6 years ago we found a 67' fastback with factory 289, automatic.  A friend of mine bought it and drove it 20 minutes home for 2500.  There is a old 64 ranchero gasser with a straight axle and everything for 400.  The same guy has a 64 chevelle convertible and a 64 impala SS, both rollers.  He wanted 900 for the chevelle and 250 for the impala.  Another guy has a 64 Caddy Coupe deville, complete, had damage to hood and LF fender for 500 and a factory hemi desoto for 500.  LOL you know anyone who wants a vega.  I had a thing for them for a while, I have two 72 GT's rollers and a 76' GT, 350 4 speed.
