10th Anniversary with cloth seats
« on: October 30, 2010, 01:57:17 AM »
I am the proud owner of a 79 10th anniversary.
Yes it is real.  This is the only I have seen that had cloth seats.
Has anyone seen this before?  I did not know this was an option.
It has cloth cushions with silver on the sides.  And the cloth back seat does have the bird in the center.

Sounds as thougha previous owner had some custom seat covers made...the original covers for a TATA would be silver leather.

I will post pics soon.
I am going to have to dig deeper into this.  I am telling you, these do not look aftermarket at all.  The silver on the sides match the silver on the regular anniversary leather seats.  The fabric is really light now, but looks like it used to be silver maybe, but being over 31 years old I am sure fading has occured.  I am picking up the car tonight so I will post pics soon.

hmm perhaps something the facotry did.  see if there is a build sheet under the back seat or under the front seats.  You got a great piece of pontiac history there welcome to the site.  cant wait to see some photos.  use www.tinypics.com  seems to be the easiest way to post them on the site.

Very interesting and doesn't look to have been done any time recent and definitely doesn't look like aftermarket covers.

Do you by any chance know the original owner of the car? Cuz whoever did those for him did a great job. The guy prob didn't like sitting on leather. I can agree with him leather does have some drawbacks

Previous owner is not original owner, he doesn't know.
If these were custom seats, and he paid a lot of money to get them done, the rest of the car must have not have gotten the same care, because this car was not well cared for.

Could those seats be out of another trans am....like a pace car?  I would understand replacing the front seats due to leather wear.  And, they would probably go with cloth because of cost.  But the rear seats don't usually get as much wear and there would be no reason to replace them with cloth.  Best thing would be to find the build seat.

I do not know yet.  I am still combing the new for pics of seats similar to mine.  I never would have swapped out leather for cloth....but thats just me

I bet you've never had leather seats recovered.  I have leather in my 92 Bronco.  I've done the drivers side twice and the passenger once.  The passenger needs it again now.  You have to buy the leather in half hides and it's tough to get an exact match.  It gets expensive.  The shop tried to talk me into vinyl but I wanted to stay with leather.  Leather is a whole lot more expensive than vinyl or cloth, that's for sure.  And, my rear leather seats are perfect and have never been touched.

Your car is a stumper.  I doubt anyone would tear out the leather rears and have them redone with cloth to match.....not on a car that's not worth anything.  And, I don't mean to say your car isn't worth anything.  But, about the time those would have been replaced, the car probably wasn't worth more than a few thousand dollars.  In the late 80's or early 90's these cars were really cheap.  I remember seeing low mileage, mint 78 T/A's for $3K.

The TATA's are one of my favorites.  It would be exciting if you found the buildsheet and it indicated a special order with cloth seats.  It's not out of the realm of possibility but I think it would be a low probability.  In any case, you've got a great car to work with.
