403 olds with 7a heads
« on: February 11, 2017, 02:27:59 AM »
I have a stock 403 with a dual exhaust from Pypes with a crossover, no cats.  I have the 3711 Edelbrock intake that has not been installed yet.  The car has 3.23 gears and stock coverter.  I have a set of 7a heads that I want to install. What I need is some cam advice.  I don't want a race car, just a nice street beast.  I will not use a Performer RPM, please no suggestions of builds with the RPM.  I want a recipe for a 403 Olds with higher compression and performer intake and dual exhaust and 3.23 gearing.  Thanks

How much compression are you wanting ? 9.0 :1 , 10.0:1 ?
What is your target HP & Torque goals ?

Are you using Cast replacement Silvo Lite Pistons.
Forged custom pistons ?

You can keep it simple and basic with 260 to 270 gross advertised duration camshaft from Crower or Isky.

Or You can get scientific and plan it out like a Race engine running on pump gas.
The Olds 403 runs great on 87 octane pump gas stock.
Higher performance Mods typically call for 91-93 octane premium pump gas and carefull ignition and carburetor tuning.
I am a Big Fan of Pontiac V8's & Oldsmobile V8's.

One big drawback of the Olds V8 is it has a non adjustable valvetrain.  To make it adjustable like Modern Pontiac V8 engine builds you have to purchase New special screw in rocker arm studs & related hardware.

Rocket V8 .com in WI comes to mind.
Comp cams sells the Olds V8 Rocker arm stud mount & guideplate kits too..costs a bit more than Pontiac V8.

I would stick with use the factory Olds 403 4A Heads myself.
Unless you find early #5 Heads.
The Head bolt holes in earlier Olds V8 engines used 7/16" headbolts.
403 Olds uses 1/2" inch diameter headbolts.
Can drill out the the headbolt holes on earlier Olds V8 heads on a Good drill press.

Bolt them on.
Try it.

I have built a 403 for myself back in 1998.
I had Joe Mondello help me, give me tips over the phone.
I used the stock 403 4A heads. Joe said they would work just fine.
I put a small hydraulic flat tappet cam in it.
I had no problem smoking blowing away Lesser Small Block Chevies. Embarresed them .

I currently have a 1965 Oldsmobile 425 ci "A" Super Rocket V8 I installed into my 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix.
It Hauls azz like a Built Pontiac 455.

We have market stalls here on weekends, potplants and jams and crotchets for the older folk. I know what you're thinking, who cares and how does it help the OP. It doesn't.

I don't recall anyone asking about your car or what you once did. But you seem to think we need to know.  Put that in the right section of the forum and introduce yourself there, not put 9 posts without reply on some guys question about something you didn't even address.
Geeves, you have a PM, since your post has been wrecked.
