No Start
« on: April 30, 2015, 05:46:31 PM »
I have not been on any forum for a while, rewiring and repairing my 79 TA. I have a strange problem. The car turns over with the
key, I have spark correct voltage gas in carb. But it will not run. I have a MSD Ignition its hooked up correct checked it 4 times
I installed a maxi fuse instead of a fusable link going to my power master starter.

OK so it turns over fine with the key but will not start. If I jump the starter from the battery it starts and runs great. Checked all fuses
replace maxi fuse. everything is hooked up right. Also have voltage at the starter so its not the ignition wire. However I do have the dash
apart. Can I be missing something like a ground to the steering switch. It just turns over with the key,I`m sure I will figure this out
just don`t want waist time and find out its just something stupid.

Do you have the ground that screws in on the floor buy sill plate?  I only ask because most of   the   time they are rusty and people cut them out. And theres one under the dash to the left of steering wheel.  All the  connections/plugs  good on  the column.  There a pain to pry off, hopefully not damaged.

Going to check it out today I do have a new mini starter on my TA.
I have one splice from the colum to the maxi fuse. Guess I will take
it apart, I use good weatherproof crimps and shrink tube all my splices.

I do have a giant schematic but of course it does not match my car.
Another strange is the purple wire off the switch goes to the flasher.
Thought is was for neutral saftey switch.

Worked all day on my TA, still will not start with the key. I did remove the ground near the drivers side kick panel.
Forgot to put it back were does that go, maybe thats the problem.

Have you checked the voltage to the ignition while cranking....not just with the key on the on position?  The ground most likely will not stop you from starting.

So looking at diagram,  purple wire should go to starter relay. So colum to fuse box , out fuse to starter. Ill try to post diagram

Thanks,
Checked all wire and voltages, also check all wires from colum to battery
and starter with a VOM. Checks out OK.
Probably something I forgot. I do have a MSD 6AL box and coil.
I do have spark when I turn the key. Going to check it out again today.
I'm hoping it's nothing in the ignition switch, but I do have DC  going to
the starter car turns over fine. I jump the starter from the battery with the key turned and it's starts?

I work in the communications field work with wires voltages all day. I was think maybe
there is some kind of ground issue behind the ads. I do have some grounds for the
panel cluster not hooked up yet.
