My '79 Gets New Shoes...Lots of Pics
« on: August 28, 2012, 10:15:46 PM »
After reading all the many threads on this site about which is the best tire size for the 15X8 WS6 rims, I finally pulled the trigger on 255/60/15s on all four.  All I have to say is I wish I hadn't waited a year.  These tires feel great and they really make me appreciate the WS6 package.  They replaced 25-year old 245/70s that really were on their last legs.  But I loved the looks of them. I have to say the BFGs 255/60s are just as good looking, if not better than the old tires, which had been on the car since the 1980s. This car is just about where I want it.  Looks pretty good for original paint.

Dude, you just read my mind lol. I have searched for threads relating to tire size before but couldn't remember what i'd decided on. (have 235/60-15's on my rally II's now, am thinking of going with 245/60-15's on my 7in flakes and couldn't remember what I wanted for my 8in flakes.) 255/60's were it! Just did a search, saw your post and noticed the date. Couldn't have been better timing lol. They look great! As well as the car.

Yup, that is what I chose 255/60/15 for my 7 inch rallyIIs and I love the looks and the cars feel!  I have Mastercraft on my PU and like them so that is why I chose them over the BFGs .  And with the close ratio steering, new suspension, ws6 sway bars, new bushings everywhere, new brakes etc, the car feels tighter than any bird I have owned.  Sub frame connectors this week end might I add.  ;D

That is exactly how I feel. I can't believe how much better the car feels to drive. BTW, you have a sweet ride.

Yea 255's should be the standard...they fit and feel great. Although I did go 275's on the back and 255's on the front to give me even more width on the back.

Looks great!
I have the same tires . Love them but I thought they looked to fat on the front so was debating to go back to factory ,but looking at them on your bird I may keep them
I'm loving your pictures and am wondering how the heck you kept the treads so clean looking lol

Thx Rainman. I literally got the tires installed, drive home, washed off the blue on the lettering, detailed car, then drove to the park for pics. So, I don't expect them to stay super clean long.

Your ride is quite awesome too SgtRock!    ;D.    And yes the handling is awesome.   I am a strong believer that good tires, good suspension and an all around firm chassis need to all work together to enhance the driving characteristics of a car.  Tires are and integral part of the cars handling.

I always had 235/60 on my 79, i wonder if 255s would make much more of a difference.

While I got ya, when you had the nose re-done, did you save the paint code from the paint can, in case you needed more in the future? Wondering what brand of paint was used and what the mixing code number on the label was, since your gold looks so good. Thanks.

Sorry I am just getting back to you.  Been a busy summer. But now that I am furloughed I have plenty of time to catch up on stuff.  You can ask Eroc22 about the paint. He painted it for me.  I remember he told me there were two different Solar Gold paint codes for the '79.  He did a great job matching the paint as the pics show. Hope that helps.
