There's a brown field wire that runs from the alternator to the ignition switch.  Those have a tendency to burn out.  Without that wire, your alternator won't charge.  Check for a burnt wire at the ignition switch.  It's a thin wire that connects with a thick brown wire in the same terminal slot on the ignition switch connector.  It originates at the alternator at the post where the high blower lead connects.

One other possibility then....

Do you have a wire (probably 10-8g) running from the + battery terminal to the alt?

When I bought my car it was wired that way and I duplicated that setup when I switched to a (1) wire alt. Never had a problem charging with this setup.

I have a 4awg wire running to a 1 wire alt.~~

Found the wire, thought it was to the stereo, had a bus fuse/holder attached-hence my thinking it went to a stereo-- attached it back to my battery, fixed my problem. Now, does this go to the battery, or alternator??

They were originally attached at the alternator, the less wires near the battery the better (fewer corrosion issues)
