Will this air cleaner base work with my 403 shaker?
« on: September 08, 2010, 07:17:57 PM »
Once again I found something I want, need some input to see if this will work with my 403 this is a nother must have item for me.

here is info from the auction.

This is an original shaker air cleaner base housing that was chromed. It was removed from 77 w72 Trans Am that is being returned to stock. It will fit directly on Trans Am's with Pontiac V8's from 76 to 79, I also tested it on a 77 Can Am, once again, direct fit. It will also fit on 74 and 75 but you will have to convert to the later style breather vent pipe and it has the provision on the side for the EGR TVS valve. Speaking of which, the original TVS valve is included along with a breather and their respective retaining clips. The chrome looks amazing on this thing, especially for something this elaborate to chrome. Because it was done as a unit, you can see a nickle shadow around the base of the Therm AC valve on the inlet, but it's certainly nothing that takes away from the overall appearance. The chrome is bright and deep and there are no pits

"It will fit directly on Trans Ams with Pontiac V8's..."

Your 403 is an Olds engine.

I believe the hole in the base has to be offset to fit a 403, that's why the shaker mounting ring is offset to compensate.

The chrome one isn't right for an Olds 403. As everyone said, it's for a Pontiac engine. You need one like the picture that 4SPEED put up.

If you want to see more pictures and explanation of what you need, look at this thread: http://transamcountry.com/community/index.php?topic=34280.0

The Olds base, while similar to the Pontiac base, isn't as sunken like a drop base, has the slightly offset carb centre and also the scalloped cutouts for clearance around the base for the water neck, distributor, cruise control and A/C bracket from memory. The fitting holes are also different but only once you know what you are looking at. Here's some more pics of a base I restored some time ago for 403:

I have a chevy non offset air cleaner on my olds engine, because I couldn't find a low enough profile one since the 455 sits higher and it works out ok but the shaker is just slightly off
