79 steering

I have a 79 T/A w/o ws6. My steering has too much play in it. Could someone tell me where to start or how to test the front end? I remember something about lifting the car up and grabbing the wheel from side to side and up and down, but I don't know how much play is too much play.

Thanks,
James

Take it to an alignment shop for a front end alignment. They won't align it if one or more parts are worn out. They will however tell you which part is worn out. Either get them to do it or take it off the hoist and go put the part(s) on yourself. Then take it back to the shop and give them the alignment job which you will have to have done anyway.
