Y88 Snowflake types
« on: January 11, 2013, 05:30:30 PM »
Hello All,

First post here, I am a long time Y88 owner, bought the car used in 1985, enjoyed it immensely, then sold it to a buddy to buy a mini van in 1990!  Anyway, the car sat in a dark storage shed largely for the next twenty two years, accumulating maybe only 1200 miles during that time.  I have now purchased the car back from him, and am starting to dig into what needs to be done for me to enjoy the car as a good condition driver.  It is in pretty good condition mechanically, interior and exterior.  It does have some rust bubbling in the rear quarters that will need to be dealt with at some point.  Also, the wheels, while are free of scrapes and scratches, could benefit from reconditioning, which I have been reading about here.

I have a quick question about the Y88 wheels for you experts.  The more I read about the Y88 wheels, it was my understanding that all of the Y88s came with the deep dish style 15X8 SE painted snowflake wheels, and that if your car didn’t have those, then you had the flatter style, 15x7 snowflake wheels. Well, that’s what my car has, and through the years guys told me that my car had the 15x7 wheels.  And since my car has always had tires mounted on the wheels, I didn't know any different.  However, this weekend I took the old tires off the wheels and discovered that my snowflakes are 15x8, though they look like the style of the 15x7 wheels.  Curious if other Y88 owners here have this style of 15x8 Y88 snowflakes.

Thank you for your feedback.

Those are 7" snowflakes. You don't measure the outer edges to measure rim width . You measure where the tire bead goes before it flares out on each side. If you measure that way it should come out closer to 7".

As for the car if it is indeed a Y88 then I believe it has had the wrong wheels put on it at some point. As far as I know all Y88s got the 15x8 snowflakes with solid gold centers with no machined edges.

They are 7 inch wheels, but it is possible your y88 could have them instead of the 8 inch wheels. The 8 inch wheels that are fully painted are unique to the ws6 option, not to the y88. Any ws6 car in 1978 would have them. If your y88 is not a ws6 car, it would have the regular 7 inch wheels.

Just did some quick research and you are right. If the Y88 didn't have WS6 as an option is got the standard 7" wheels.

Thank you for the feedback.  I looked at my sway bar to see if WS6 was on my car or not.  From the initial peek it looked like i may have the smaller bar, so this probably explains the 15X7 polished.

Sir,

Another thing to look for is the frame bars/frame braces.
It's just a short bar bolted to the inner rail of the sub-frame to the lower control arm mount.
There is one on each side (WS6 equiped).
The bar is like 6-8" long.
Just another something to look for.
From '78 off the assembly line, to '85 when you first owned the Y88 is a decent amount of time.
Crap happens.
Wheels come and go.
Find your build sheet.
Either way you put it..........Y88 is one hell of a beauty.

I love the Y88's.

Post up pictures and these guys will tell you everything.
Damn........ I love the Y88's
