The 1978-ish Trans Am..
« on: September 25, 2009, 05:38:28 PM »
Hello all. Here is my Trans Am project, started 17 years ago (not continuous). The obsession started, like many, after watching Smokey and the Bandit as a kid, then I had to have one. I had a friend in high school with an original 78 marty, and wanted the thing so bad, but never had the funds. So I always told myself that I would own one someday, even if I had to build it. I started by getting my old neighbor's 77 ta with a good drivetrain and interior, then found a 79 body from Florida 6 years later. The guys were trying to make it into a drag car, but the frame and the quarters were PERFECT, so I picked it up for $400. We repaired the floor and trunk panels, and numerous rust spots here and there, cut another car apart to steal cowl pieces and such, cut out the welded motor mounts and pulled off the "custom" metal panel interior. I love the 77-78 look, so we cut the rear panel out and replaced it with the GM panel to accept the tail lights. We put on new door skins, and FINALLY got it painted!!  I am into the interior now, all parts are repainted, new headliner in, new seat upholstery, and wiring, carpet, glass, decals, yada yada yada on the way. It is getting the 77 deluxe black interior, saved from the original 77, and will eventually get the LCD tail light upgrade and the 17X9" argent Year One Rims. By far not a numbers matching anything, but it's MINE! Anyway, here she is so far, hope you enjoy.....

More to come.....

oh yeah, your marty is absolutely PERFECT! Reminds me of the one my friend had back in high school. If I can get mine to look half as good as yours I'll be happy.  Yes, the car is set up as a 4 speed, but had the auto in it when I got the car. I have the auto set up, so I am going to run it for now, but I am leaving the clutch pedal in it, and keeping the linkage, you know, just in case..... :)

That's looking GREAT!

The blue looks so good on these cars - can't wait to see it all finished up.

A couple more pics. Got the windshield installed, flush mount. I think it turned out great, and gives the car a nice, clean look. I couldn't get the back to flush mount without having a 2" wide universal strip go in and risk it buckling at the tighter turns. Oh well, the rear trim will be painted matte black to match anyway. Not sure why they made the rear glass so "short" compared to the body. A couple other rough interior shots as well. I HIGHLY recommend the abs t-top headliner from Hitman, it fits VERY nice..... more to come

Nice ... bet you're itching to get it all done.  I see the boxes strategically positioned to support.

Yep, GOT to keep the motivation, especially coming into the winter months. I also have empy boxes to the outside of the car to "kid proof" the thing. Working so far.......
