Title: Schmeave’s 1979 Trans Am 400/T56, T Top conversion
Post by: TAKID455 on January 02, 2011, 10:24:11 PM
Introduction
Fellow member Schmeave had acquired a 79 T/A sight unseen over the summer and set out to build a nice fair weather. back road cruising machine. While the car looked decent, the great lakes region had not been kind to the car.   Schmeave began gathering parts and disassembling the T/A. While hunting for a set of seats, he ran into me as I had some available. After some discussions regarding overall plans and what he had as a foundation, we agreed that it would be best to salvage what we could and start with a better foundation. Luckily for Schmeave, he did not have to go far.

I happen to have a ’79 T/A on the lot. It also happens to be my first T/A some 16 yrs ago. Coincidentally, Schmeave’s goals for the car are very similar to mine if I had kept the car. A deal was struck and the build begins.

Currently, the agenda consist of the following:

Body
Convert Hard Top to T Top roof
Strip car to bare metal and finish with either a shade of blue or red
Lizard skin for interior heat and sound retardation
Underside with be sprayed with bed liner for durability and maintenance free

Suspension
Del- A – lum bushings in the control arms
Solid body mounts
Firewall braces
Subframe connectors
Increased rate springs from PT Fbody
Powdercoated suspension and frame items
Koni adjustable shocks on all 4 corners
Cad plated hardware

Driveline
Engine is an existing 400 w/ 62 heads and XE274 cam. This may change in the future.
Transmission will consist of a T56 from parts GM and Viper
Stock 10 bolt with have 3.73 gears installed for optimization w/ the 400/T56 combo.
Exhaust will consist of Tri-Y headers and 2.5” Oval exhaust w/ ‘X’ pipe.

Additionally, all plumbing will be stainless and rear disk brakes will be installed.

Interior is in very nice condition so that will be cleaned up and reinstalled.

With out further ado, I introduce the the 3rd iteration of the 1979 T/A.

For those wondering, a 2nd gen will fit in the bed of a '56 F250.  ;D

While the 79 was redone in the 90’s, daily driver life and NJ weather took its toll. First order of business was to remove all rust being at the rear. At the current the majority of the rust has been remover and patched. Welds have not been dressed.

All rust has been removed and areas that become exposed that will become sealed are treated to prevent future oxidation.  (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Takid455/1979%20TA/J%20Cooper%20build/Body/10-17-1010.jpg)

Having some fun with wheel selection. Old school cragars. roughly 12" wide tires on 10" rims.

ROOF SWAP
While this may look intimidating, with proper careful measurements and time, it is really not too difficult.
Simple instructions
1)   Remove glass
2)   Measure and mark points from roof to cowl. Same for the rear. I used the pins for the trim clips. While the 2 roofs have different pin locations, it is beneficial to mark constant line such as center line of cowl and roof as with cross or diagonal points. Be sure to measure both roofs before cutting. Use the same body reference points
3)   Brace interior of car and leave doors on. Rebuild the hinges if needed.
4)   Use a torch to melt the lead out
5)   Drill out spot welds in the rear sail
6)   Pick a spot on the ‘A’ pillar and mark an offset line
7)   Cut donor roof. Best to cut more than needed
8)   Cut roof off original car
9)   Clean  up cut areas and fit donor roof. Easier w/ 2 people
10)   Trim A pillar until cuts are flush and more importantly, the measurements are good. I am told 1/8” is acceptable, however, for this car I was able to get them exact and no more than 1/16” off in only a few spots. Take your time
11)   Test fit glass
12)   Grind outer metal from ‘A’ pillar so you can weld inner structural metal. I also add reinforcements
13)   Add some post welds and check measurements.
14)   Adjust as needed. Hopefully all is well. Continue welding.
15)   W/o welding too much, open and close doors. There should ne NO difference in alignment or before and after closing/ opening habits.
16)   Test fit  Glass Tops
17)   If all is well, finish and dress welds.

Car currently is strapped to a body dolly in preparation for sand/ soda blasting which should happen w/in the next few weeks along with sand blasting all the suspension items and frame. The underside needs a little more cleaning and we are good.

Some before shots of the interior, A/C, trim and wiring items. In order to help stretch the dollar, Schmeave is doing a good bit of the cleaning and detailing.

Same here. just note sure where... ;)  You are doing a fine job on yours. Keep it up.
Nice build :) how many cars went into this project?

Just one main car and parts from 3 others.
WOW, looking good Larry!  I love the work you did to your Super Duty.  When I drove your Super Duty I can't believe how fast that cars really is and how nicely you made that Suspension.  It corners better than any T/A I've ever driven.

I will always speak highly of your work as I've seen the results.

Glad you enjoyed that one. I know I have.  I intend not to disappoint on this one either. Hopefully I'll have a new ride to comfort your 76 for a night this year.

Stay tunned for more progress. Car and parts will be heading to the blaster this week following a stop at the powder coater after the blaster is done. Hoping to have the parts coated and the body in high build primer by month's end.

Question: What RPM range are you planning on running your 400 in with the T56? Also what bellhousing adaptor and clutch/pressure plate are you going with?

I ask for purely selfish reasons since I'll be doing a T56 swap also.  ;D

Lots of work ahead of you but looks great so far.

Conrad - we hope so

Justin - Thanks. While it is a bit of work, it is quicker and more efficient in the long run. Many years of experience helps too.

Chvywolf - 1800 @ 75 mph, 2000 @ 83 mph in 6th. 3.73 rear and 26" tall tire. You can use a regular GM clutch application. I am using a Quicktime bellhousing for this build. I have modified stock Lakewoods in the past. The T56 swap will be discussed more in about a month or 2 when the subframe gets assembled.

Picked up car from blaster. OK job, but it got the critical areas done. I need to DA the body anyway. Some of the etching primer that was applied 15 yrs ago still holes up under blasting. Good stuff. I don’t mind that. A good bit of work to go before primer, but I’ll be able to attack it.

Lots of parts are at the powder coater which should be done in a week or so.

Bare metal was treated w/ a rust inhibitor to prevent flash rust hence the deeper color.

The following paint marker remains were found on the firewall. If the owner wants, I ‘ll put them back. I believe I have the RPO code definitions correct.

A31 – Power Windows
N65 – Spare tire
D54 - ??, I know is a common code
F41 – Suspension Package
WS4 – Trans Am

Baking soda for the sheet metal and sand for the the hard parts, underside and inside. #2 or 00 sand, finer than play sand he said. The blaster was conservative on the outer panels as he didn't want to warp them. He could have gone a little more aggressive and been fine IMO. He did use a combined mix in areas that either had heavy rust and or filler. Being the inside will be sprayed with Lizard Skin and the bottom undercoated/ Herculined, we were not all too concerned with those areas.

Time for an update. All suspension and drivetrain components have been powder coated. T56 build is almost complete and the rear end will be build shortly with 3.73 ratio gears. All hard has been blasted and sent to get cadmium plated in black and gold.

As always, more thin metal and rust was found as things progressed. Most of that has been replaced to prevent future deterioration. The frame section is the last piece remaining. A donor section will be removed form a part car instead of doing patch work as the car is intended to see some use.

Rough body work is almost done and hope to have at least the body in primer soon. The doors and trunk lid will be fit to the car prior to spraying the primer to check for misalignment.

Wrapped up all the metal work sans a frame patch w/ floor area above it. Was coming up on moist weather so I wanted to get this into primer. That area will be done shortly. Did rough body work and applied a poly high-build primer for the body and PPG DP for the areas that wont be sanded. High build sans pretty nice vs others I have used. Filler looks built up. But most of it is very thin.  Now its time to block the body and find highs and lows.

T56 trans is done and looks awesome. Headers are ceramic coated black and all suspension parts, bracketry and inner sheet metal have all been powder coated.

Sourced bellhousing or custom made? Was thinking about the Keisler or American Powertrain offerings, but wouldn't mind keeping a little money in my pocket piecing it all together.

Be sure to post a pic of the underside once the drivetrain is in. Looking very good....

This one has a modified Lakewood bellhousing as none were available when the car was built. Quick time has a nice unit today which I will be using for this build. Crossmember is a custom unit that I engineered. I can have more made if needed.

Car is back at the shop. looks good. replacing a section of the rear frame rail. Just need to to finish welding the replacement section and them I will Raptor line the underside and trunk of the car followed by Lizard Skin on the interior. Will be using SEM hotrod black for the dash, cowl and firewall sections. Hopefully that will all get done this month.

Frame rail is fixed along with final floor patch above rail.

started assembling the subframe.
Control arms have all Global West components. Not to bad to install. Needed to increase the diameter of the one UCA hole as they are different sizes from the factory. It would be wise to have some paint handy to tough up the bushings after pressing them as the nice blue anodized coating will scrap off.

Engine and trans scheduled to be installed Tuesday and the underside of the car sprayed over the weekend.

Pics to follow

Now that the rust is all gone, we can begin on the fun stuff

Installing Global West Del-a-Lum bushings. Careful to note that the GW bushings are all the same diameter and the upper control arms will need one hole to be enlarged or the bushing will not press in period. Also nice to have some paint the same color of the blue andonization handy as you will scrape it off. Make sure to line up the grease fittings so they can be accessed w/ a grease gun. Failure to do so will result in premature wear of the bushings.

All parts here on in are either plated, powder coated or stainless.

A good bit of work has been completed since last posting. Underside is sprayed with rubberized undercoating and Lizard Skin has been spayed on the inside. Firewall  cowl sprayed with Hot Rod black.
Suspension, all plumbing and assembled subframe installed to body. Car once again rolls. Front sheet metal is hung for initial fitment. Car has been sent to Schmeave’s house so he can sand the jams and once over the body before it goes in for paint.  Some changes have been made to the original plan so stay tuned.

Body is blocked with 100 grit and is officially in paint jail.  Should be released late fall / early winter.

Picked up some 18" Rushforth Nighttrains for the car. Matte black with polished hardware will look nice against the Mopar Toxic Orange paint. Added some flake to the paint for an added 'pop'.

door & hood - I didn't like the original door that was selected so another one was found. Jail is fine combing the hood and door to prep for the HOK epoxy sealer.

Some progress shots. Body spray with epoxy primer / sealer and blocked followed by Toxic Orange (2010 Challenger) in Dupont chromabase Base/ Clear. Needs to be wet sanded & buffed. Car is planned to back at my place with sheet metal hung. From there, the mechanicals and electrics will be finished and the car hopefully moving on its  own by year’s end / early ’13.

After the car arrived form paint jail, assembly of body bolt –ons began along with the laying out the electrical systems. We will be integrating the following into the factory harness:
Twin Electric fans w/ controller
Keyless door and trunk entry
Relayed door locks and windows
Modern Stereo
T56 Transmission
Remote battery in trunk
ECU power for future EFI
Electric fuel pump for future EFI
Adding a relay/ fuse box for fans, ecu, Fuel pump, A/C, & head lights
Electric Speedometer

An updated wiring diagram will be made as well. I do my best to keep wiring codes similar to the factory for easy diagnosis and identification. (Pink- Ign Hot, Red – Bat hot, Orange – Fused Hot, ect)  Tracer wire & gauges then go to individual components.  All this and try to keep it looking factory. Takes a good bit of planning and time, but worth the effort when it all works.

Beginning of the electrical adventure

Above is all nicely loomed and finalized.

A plan for the car to come to life again before year’s end was set. Not one to fall short, not only did it come back to life, it moved on its own.  Sounds really good w/ straight headers. Pushed like this are good as you find all the little things needed to complete the project/ system.

Car is back over at paint jail to take care of a few things and is expected to return early February. Some minor electrical items will be addressed along with installation of dash and finalizing the mechanical components.  Glass and Exhaust will follow. I don’t see why this car should not be road worthy by spring time.

Some shots outside & w/ Rushforth 18” Night trains wrapped in Nittos

Looks awesome! I love the color. Is looks somewhat similar to the last car you did.

I have a couple quick questions and I apologize if they have been covered already. Will you be using a hydraulic or mechanical clutch linkage? If hydraulic what kind of setup will be using for master? And does that bell housing allow for mechanical clutch? it looks like it has a plate for the clutch fork pivot.

Also is that the viper T56? What will you be doing for the speedometer? And finally how much further back is the shifter from a muncie or ST-10?

Color is Mopar Toxic Orange w/ added flake. This overall build is slowly becoming the baby brother to my gold 78. IF you look at the builds, you will be similarity amoungst designs & parts. Somethings were changed.

We are using hydrualic clutch system using a 4th gen m/c & TOB. Rest is stock 2nd gen.  The Quicktime bell can utilize a mechanical linkage. A removable  plate w/ pivot is included with it new. Trans is LS T56 w/ viper tail which positions the shifter in the stock 2nd gen location more or less. Speedometer is converted to electric vs the use of Cable X. I tried an over the counter cross member for this build, but my make a run of the one I design as this one has some fitment issues.

Thanks for the info. I'm still trying to decide what to do with my TA. I got spoiled with the T56 in my 85 and I want more gears in my 79. I would like to keep the mechanical clutch and it looks like that quicktime bell housing with a LS1 T56 and viper tail is the way to go. I would like to keep mechanical speedo so maybe I can find a converted tail housing.

My only question about the viper tail is do you need a special yoke that is the larger outer diameter and the smaller 26 spline? Or did you put the viper main shaft in there as well?

I've heard of some issues with cable X. Maybe that was the older versions though.

As for the yoke isn't the LS1 T56 27 spline stock?

Either way any all of this is way out as I don't have the funds after my recent motor build so won't be until next year anyway. I thank you for your input and it gives me a clear idea of what is required and maybe a list of parts I can start to acquire.

Can't wait to see this 79 finished and how everything works out!

Lilski - color or shall we say effect is similar. gold vs orange. both have metallics and pearls. Clutch is all hydraulic based on 4th gen f body. Speedo has been converted to electric to work directly w/ VSS. With Viper tail, shifter is in relatively the same spot as the stock 4 spd shifter.

Finished all the electrical and have all systems operating including keyless locks and trunk. To add some effects, the side marker lights blink when the any keyless function is performed like on newer cars.  While integrating old and new wiring takes time, it pays off when everything fits nicely an looks stock.

Breaking into some nice weather (mid – upper 40’s whooo!!)  so I took the car out for a shake down run. Goes very well for everything being roughly set.  Making a punch list of bugs, adjustments and littles as testing and tuning progresses which is to be expected. Going over r to the paint shop for final touch ups Monday and should return in a couple of weeks for A/C and minor littles installation.  This ride should be hitting the roads hard come end April/ early May.  Decals will be applied at some point in the future to break up the sea of orange.

Fantastic job from start to finish. That shade of orange with the black wheels looks great. I have a question about the interior bracing. Does bracing always have to be done if the car is going on a rotisserie?

Mechanical speedo  - Use Abott Cable X.

Uses TH400 yoke. 32 spline
How exactly did you convert you speedo to electric?
And why so many relays for the powered windows?

One relay for each function per side

Cable-X converts the signal.

10/14/14 (Job completed spring of 2014)

To enhance the stopping capabilities and to better balance the car, the factory 4 wheel disc system was removed in favor of the Corvette C5/6 brake setup.  A Tick clutch master cyl was also installed. The feel is more like a mechanical clutch than hydraulic. It does perform nicely as expected. Brakes make a huge noticeable difference. Highly recommended. Requires 17” or greater diameter rims.

Front rotor comparison. Stock, C5, C6 Z06.
