1981 Trans Am
« on: February 04, 2012, 02:20:18 PM »
I had wanted a 1977-1978 t-top Trans Am for my son and I to tinker on. Was suppose to go look at two out of state this weekend but they were sold. Looked at this one a month ago but passed. Called the guy back last night since the other two fell through. Short story, he gave me such a good price (in my opinion) that I couldn't pass up. An original (except radio) 1981 Trans Am 5.0 liter 4 speed with 93, 199 original miles. The clock still works. Needs paint, passenger seat split restitched, headliner on passenger side is loose, needs window sweeps, front grill inserts replaced,  3 small dents on passenger door and rust spot on top of car and to the lower right front fender.  AC needs charging. Aside from fixing what is needed, the only thing else I plan on doing is putting snow flakes on it. If I am reading the Production Numbers correctly on this site, it looks to be 1 of 2866.

My apologies. I did not mean for the pictures to be so large.

Will do! Fortunately my brother in-law can do the paint and body work. My only goal is to have a presentable daily driver. Couldn't pass it up for $3500!

More like you stole it for that price.
Congratulations to you and your son.

Thanks ShakerBreaker. Here's the long story behind it. I had asked family and friends to keep an eye out for a Trans Am for sale. My cousin works at a repair shop (car brakes, insepctions, motorcyclles, lawnmowers, etc). He gave me the name and directions to the guys house. The guy had 2 1981 Trans Ams. A automatic, white with red interior that had been "hot rodded" by the previous owner and this one.  According to the owner- "I got sick in 2010 and the doctors didn't know if I was going to make it. I had the tube down my throat (intubated) and everything. That is why I sound the way I do now. After I got better and was able to come home, I thought there wasn't any sense leaving money in the bank for other people to enjoy so I went crazy and bought lots of stuff...guns, boats, cars. Now I realize it was stupid of me to do that. I spent $6900 for the white one and the guy lied to me about it. He said there wasn't anything wrong with it and he would even deliver it to me. He did and after he left I found out he lied about it. I had to get my mechanic to rebuild the transmission. I want $2500 for it. I bought the black one from a guy in Rocky Mount who collects cars. I've got close to $10,000 in it. The guy had it in his garage under a car cover. He sold it so he could make room for his 1969 Camaro. I'll sell it for $5000.

That is what I was told by the PO on my first visit. My cousin later verified this.  I went back nearly 2 weeks later and looked at the white one. While there, I again started looking at this one. Before leaving the owner said "If someone is really interested in it I'll let it go for $3500 today but I don't know about later." I left as I really want a 77 or 78 t-top. This past weekend I was suppose to go to SC and look at a 1978 with Hurst T-tops that sold on Thursday (I couldn't get off until Saturday) and, when that fell through, to VA to look at a 1979 with t-tops. That one sold Friday. While talking to one of my older brothers Saturday morning, I mentioned this one. He told me I'd be crazy not to get this one if the guy would still sell it for $3500 as it needs so little to get it into a presentable daily driver. I called the guy and asked if he would still sell it for $3500. He paused for a moment and said "Yeah. I'll sell it to you for that. I'd rather your son and you enjoy it as it just sits in the yard most of the time."

Here I was looking at cars that were out of state on Craigs list and I found one 21 miles from my house. My son loves riding in it. I did find two other problems today:
1. The passenger side front turn signal does not work. The running light, and all the other lights do, just not the turn signal on that side. My brother and I have ruled out the socket and bulb. Have a friend coming to try to trace the problem down this week. 2. I find my self wanting to change into 5th gear...lol. Doesn't work on a 4 speed.
My apologies for the long-winded story.

Thanks ShakerBreaker, but I am perfectly healthy to be 41. I was quoting the previous owner. He was the one who was sick in 2010.

Oops--- my bad.
Misunderstood what I read.
Either my age of 41 has me crazy or I battle using this phone for internet.

Word on the street---- "Dude and his son have a Trans Am!"

Hey, nice buy! Just like mine, except mine being auto. Not a 77 but youŽll learn to love it. I wouldnŽt change mine now.
