~~~~~Prefered tires~~~~~~
« on: February 02, 2010, 08:48:10 AM »
I have always put BF's on all my vehicles.  I found they have been the best by far for handling and wear and tear.
I noticed on alot of TA's that BF's are very common.
Note: Dayton brand is on the TA now, and actually I never heard of them.  When these wear out, BF's are going on.
I have Good Year Eagles on my 55 Chevy and they have lasted a long time.
They need to be replaced now but they were on the car when I bought it and that was in '96.
I would buy them again.
The TA has Dunlops but they are shot so can't say much about them.
I usually go for the round tires, as the square ones make for a rough ride.
BFG's Radial T/A tires are more nostalgia.  They aren't the best-handling or wearing tires.  I get 'em for the look.  I also had Dayton Daytonas on a car I sold on here.  They were ok, but I won't likely buy another set.  Personally, for the money, I like the ride and traction of Cooper Cobras. That is what I put on the '73.  My first set of Coopers gave me nothing to complain about on wear, traction, and noise; so-  oops... I did it again.
I have been experimenting. Daytons arent bad once they get heated up. They tend to have a rough ride until they heat up a little. Coopers are ok just didnt hold up as well as I thought they should ( got a softer tread wear rating than i normally do). GY Eagles... great tire but again too soft on hot southern roads and tend to wear fast because of it. Ones that i have not investigated is the foreign brands... just dont seem right to have a set on a American car. The ones i liked for a good crusing tire are the Uniroyal but locally they are getting hard to find.
Currently running BFG Radial TA's on the Y88. I like the handling even though its a tall tire - stock tire size on 15x8" rims.
Eventually I think I'll spring for a set of 17" Year One snowflakes and see what options I have then.
For the 80 Firebird...it'll keep whatever it has for the time being. It just needs to roll in the yard as its not tagged and has no engine/tranny to it ;) I'm still kicking around what I want to do rim wise for this car. I'm leaning towards refinishing the steel/chrome rims that are on it currently - just because its cheaper than the alternatives!
reguardless of what brand tire I have or will put on any of my vehicles here is one I will never install... It has a nice concept but dont see it being practical for high speed road use. I see liability issues from thrown debri.
I talked to a Rep at a bfg tire stand a couple years back about how hard it was to find radial t/as. He told us that they weren't making them anymore and were going to replace them with a new style. I don't know if this is still the case as this was back in 08.
