70 Trans Am numbers

I am looking at a 70 Trans Am , the guy claims it has the original engine but the engine number does not match the VIN . On 70 Trans Ams should the original engine number match the last 6 numbers in the VIN ?

Yes, the partial VIN stamp on the right front of engine (near timing cover) should match the vehicle VIN.
