200R4 transmission
« on: May 30, 2013, 04:19:29 PM »
Hello All,

I was looking for a 200R 4 tranny to put into my 78 TA found many sites that offer this tranny for 2500 to 3000 which I thought was pricey.

I found the bussiness based in Tampa,FL and they offer a 200R4 with 2 year unliimited mile warranty for around 1400 dollars. This stage 2 unit is supposed to handle 600HP.

http://www.transdepot.net/2004R-_c_10.html.  Hope this helps anyone looking for an affordable 200R4.

There's a place in OH that Russ (Lomileta) has mentioned before - Janis transmissions. Really big in the Buick GN circuit as he builds 200R4 trannies for high end race cars. Rather economical if I recall - in about the same price range.

My only question on your original price was if it included all the needed accessories? I had a quote from Bowtie Overdrives and it was around $2500 shipped for a Stage 2 tranny with all the goodies to install it and adjust properly.

Personally, for my Y88, I'm still kicking around what I want to do as I'm getting the urge to return it back to full numbers matching and toss a Gear Vendors OD unit on the numbers matching Th350 and call it a day. Then the 455 and 200R4 would go into my toy car. Still kicking all that around in my head....

**Editted as I located the name of the shop.

Yeah I just got a message from Mongo regarding Bowtie. The tranny came with the converter (no charge) the holley linkage is extra, my builder has the yoke and the detent cable is extra.

Dennis ( of Allmusclecars) said he would put in switch that would lock the converter up in OD and it would unlock should I press the brake pedal.

They are close to me (Tampa) is I need to excersize that 2 year unlimited mile warranty. The price and proximity were the 2 deciding factors for me. I'll let everyone know how it does when I get it on the road in July.

Brian I'm not sure but I don't think the stage 2 has the billet input drum . Don't you think a stage 3 would be good insurance when you put a 455 in front of it?
I know I'd buy nothing but a stage 3 and it would have to come from Janis transmissions . I was pretty impressed when I phoned there and Janis himself answered the phone and actually took the time to talk to me

It's not the HP but the Torque that will bother it. Wish we could rebuild a basic trans down here for $1500, already spent more than that on parts and kit without finding anyone who knows enough about them to go further or order in what's missing. A decent, ready-to-go unit would be far cheaper, even with shipping, but you would need to find a reputable place to throw that sort of coin around knowing warranty is worthless as is chasing them up for problems later if not done how you wanted. It would be good to know someone who bought one of these transmissions rather than rebuild their own, and how it's holding up years on.

With you living "down under" i understand you concerns. My motor has 460 ft/lbs of torque so I will keep posting my experience with this tranny as I will be on the road this summer traveling from Florida to South Dakota and back. Transmission Depot is close to me so I felt it was a good choice for me warranty -wise. With the 2 year unlimited mile waranty I like it was good for my situation.

Like I said I'll keep you posted on it's proformance.

Same torque as mine so will be interesting. Another guy locally with a Camaro also picked up a transmission, think it was those guys or at least one of the others that sell their 200r4 in stages on ebay. But his car is in pieces, like mine I guess, and isn't expected to install it for a year or two so not much to go off. But I'd still like think that guys who build many of them over there will be better at knowing what is needed and how to setup than one of the specialists locally who may have seen one 10 years ago and not since, but at least drop it in for final fitting and adding of lockup solenoid etc. Something to look into when liekly to be that far along but still, no real feedback on guys with them from those places.

Actually, a quick search on them in forums finds more unhappy than happy customers, usually the way or you hear nothing at all. But these guys seem to come up as a decent transmission:

I looked that website over. Their warranty is only one year as transmission depot's warranty is 2 years unlimited miles.

We will see. Like I said I'll keep you posted

I looked at the specs on the stage 2 and wonder how they came up with good for 600hp ? Maybe that's with 200 foot pounds of torque ? Sure they upgraded the sunshell ,but they never did anything with the input shaft which is the first thing to snap .
I couldn't do this unless Janis built it

Sorry Rainman, didn't see your questions until now.

My gameplan is to talk directly with Janis and see what he would recommend based off my theoretical 377HP/477tq engine. My guesstimate is that I'm in Stage 2 territory but that's an uneducated guess. That's also going off what Bow Tie recommended in their quote to me a few years ago.

As I have a 200R4 core already I should be ahead of the game and get a discount of sorts....I hope.

Rain I understand your comcerns but they have a 2 year UNLIMITED miles warranty and they are close. My builder just put the tranny in the car along with fuel injection and he was extremely impressed. He said the car smoke the tires in !st and Second gear with the A/C on!

Again, I'll keep everyone posted on any issues with the tranny.

Under project restorations you can see the tranny getting ready to go in. Dennis ( so far ) is really impressed. He said the shifts were crisp. Looks like I'll get to drive it this eweekend ( Friday ).

Should be ready in about a week. I'm getting excited!

For giggles, I asked Janis for a quote using my core and installing in my car. Response was 1500-1800. I'm sold on them as they're somewhat local to me and have a very good reputation. Now to save the coin to do it...

This shop did not need a core. Price quoted was with no core.
