Title: Orange Turbo Trans Am's
Post by: J-Train on December 13, 2007, 05:03:26 PM
I remember seeing one of these when I was a kid shopping for Trans Am's with my dad, i really wanted him to buy one but he got a black and tan K code, similar to mine, but not a z code. I really liked the orange and have never seen another one in person, I only found one picture googling, anybody else got any pics hidden away, it is really a striking shade of orange.

Sorry, about the creepy avatar guys, just my weak attempt at some humor, I'll come up with something else.

Back to the car, the car in the pic looks like the paint has aged with the car., were there any other years that were orange? I seem to remember the color looking a little more metalic, and bright, but it was definately a 80 or 81, I remembrer the gold turbo wheels with the tan interior, there was a bright metalic blue one on the lot with the same gold  turbo wheels and interior.

Is that an engine size callout just above the front side trun signal bezal in that photo?
I do love that orange '81 in the first picture.
1981s had some nuce colors.
I remember a gunmetal gray as well.

Jeff:  This T/A comes down from Canada to the All Firebird Lawn Show in Saratoga NY, every year.  It always draws a lot of interest because many people haven't seen this color on a T/A before.

George: Yes it is an engine size callout... 350. If you look at the shaker in the first pic you'll see T/A 5.7

I've seen a couple that color before...is that it's original color?
Any pix of the hood bird?

I talked to the owner and he says that it is a factory color... he didn't say if it's the original color of his T/A.

Not the best pic, but it has the five color gold hood bird:

In 1980 only, there was a bronze color available on the turbo t/a.  its rare to see any cars with it, as not many cars were purchased with that color.  The 5.7 350 car though looks like a custom orange.

It is actually listed in the GM literature as Orange Metallic.  I'm afraid a previous owner used rubbing compound on my car and managed to diminish the luster of the metallic paint.  The paint is in good shape, but the hood bird is showing its age.

Orange was only available in '81 as a factory color, paint code 57.  I have no clue what stripes were available with Orange paint, but every place I've checked shows gold or orange stripes.  Funny thing is, mine's 100% original and has black stripes, identical to those used on the Pace Car and NASCAR SEs.  I think gold stripes would fit the peanut butter-and-chocolate interior, but that's the way it came, so I'm not changing it.

I have even more pics than I previously posted, if anyone's interested.

That sounds like a great idea...looking forward to meeting you in August. Did you get the bird in Chandler?
I may have to take a drive over there and have a look around  ;)

Reservations are in place....I'll be there for sure. I don't understand how you guys had any fun the previous years without me anyway... ;D

I would have been there last year (at least for Saturday) except "someone" gave me bad info regarding the swap meet :-X

I did't get that t/a it was a little to rusty for me. If you know were the dragstrip is in Chandler the guy lived just north of the track on the left. Last year at the nats we set up at the swap meet and had a good time. We sold parts left over form two t/a' s we parted out I had two turbo setup that kept luring people in.

Man I have always thought an orange T/A would be the coolest thing! BUT when I finally get one and get it painted it'll most likely be black.
But the orange is cool!

Wow orange is pretty cool, but I could never own one around here. If you sport orange, you're assumed to be an obnoxious Tennessee fan which I'm not haha. But yeah it's a cool paint color, seems like an aftermarket color and it's surprising that it was actually a factory color. very cool.

I do not like the double fender flares on the one pic.  It seems overkill to me.  But a very nice color.

It is a factory color and after further research and investigation it seems the 57 Navajo Orange paint code was only available for our buddies at Canadain Dealerships (This was told to me by the owner of an Orange T/A at the Saratoga Lawn Show who just so happened to be from Canada).  They may be rare, but there is no data to support how many were made with this paint code.  But it is different.

My car was shipped from the factory to a dealership in Texas, according to my PHS docs.

It really is too bad that GM didn't keep detailed build counts like they did with the 4th-gen cars.

EDIT:  Wow, this really is an old thread...  I didn't think it had been that long since I've been around.  Anyhow, if anyone's interested, I've got pics of my car from when I first got it.  I haven't had any time to work on the car since getting the new(ish) engine in.

No underhood pics right now.  Like I said, those are from when I brought it home (4 years ago...), the motor was blown and I didn't bother taking any under the hood.  I'll try to get out to my shop this weekend and snap some pics now that the hood's off and the good motor is in.

That one looks pretty close to Carousel Red.  Looks like it'd be a good car if someone had the cash.

Last photo was taken by a friend of mine who's a photographer. It has been digitally "enhanced," so to speak. Of course he couldn't wait to take the pic until I was done checking and adjusting my timing...

I swapped some turbo wheels on the car when I bought new Mickey Thompson 255/60R15 tires. Makes a world of difference. I'm still planning on restoring the snowflakes at some point (they should be gold...), but not until the car gets repainted and the correct stripes are back on it (Dark Orange). With the black stripes, I think gold snowflakes would look very out of place.
