value of a 79 TATA 400 4 spd
« on: June 08, 2009, 07:26:08 AM »
Hey everyone.I am looking at a 79 TATA 400 4spd car with  81000 miles and numbers matching. The car has solid quarters, with surface rust slightly around the wheel well and some around the rear window, but no holes.The car does need a front floor pan, but a new one comes with it.The interior was taken out to repair the floor, and the front nose and fenders have been removed to begin a restoration, but the car has been sitting with no more progress. The car will still start and move. The car will need a complete repaint and decals installed and I would redo the interior. Sorry I do not have any pics. Anyone have any idea of what the value of this  project may be. He is looking for a reasonable best offer.

Thanks

Hey;
I just purchased a 78 T/A with the same 400 4spd setup.  It sounds like they needed identical work including the floor, interior, one quarter, etc.  Mine was in great running condition though with a lot of performance upgrades and a freshly rebuilt engine and tranny, matching numbers(receipts included).  Mine came with t-tops, power windows, locks and all the gauges worked.  I paid 5k for it which I felt was a good deal considering having the engine and tranny rebuilt would cost 3k done right.  This should give you an idea what kind of offer to make.  Also, I bought mine off ebay, not some farm where it was sitting behind a barn for a 2 decades, so it had exposure with lots of interest.

Probably $2K to $5K depending on many things ... it's a 4 speed car, they're worth a little more.  It's in pieces with the fenders/nose/hood ... I think it's something you'd have to look at.  Running/moving doesn't denote that the driveline is trouble free.

Thanks guys for the replies. He is telling me he wants $6000 for the car. He feels that it is worth it because of the small # of them produce. I believe just over 1800 400 4speed tenth anniversaries. I did get a better look at the car, the bottoms of the fenders are rotted, the bottoms of the doors are also rusting, and it will need a couple patches in the quarters along with the drivers front floor pan. Car was repainted once, so who knows what is under the paint. It does run good, but needs a clutch. (he has new clutch parts to go with. Radiator support also has rust.

Ah, I missed the TATA in your first post.  But with all that rust/rot he's asking top dollar in my mind.  But, they're probably worth a bit more since 1817 were made - I mean, how many are really left?

If you're good at welding, you can make it worth your while.

Yeah I know that it is a rare model. I just wasn't sure what it is worth with the work it needs. I do know restored ones bring a lot.

Way to high of a price even for a TATA 4-spd.

My bet is the rust alone will require you to get a full donor car.
