1975 corvette
« on: October 16, 2010, 04:08:27 PM »
This guy wants 3500 for a 1975 corvette, it looks pretty solid, interior is decent, and the paint is new, but is bubbling up in some places not too horrible, but when he goes to start the motor, which has a preformer intake, and a new camshaft it makes a very loud screeching noise before it starts he says the guy who had it before shimmed it and it will go away over time is this true

Screeching is pretty general. Could be anything from a loose belt to a spun bearing. Can you tell us where the screech is coming from?

would the belt being loose be the reason why it makes that loud noise before it starts, and then the noise stops, the owner even said it was the flexplate??

Could be they have the starter too close to the flexplate...and the sound will go away eventually...after all the teeth are sheared off the flexplate  :D :D

I would say that it is the belt also.  What does it look like underneath?

I didnt not get a good luck underneath, it was too close to the ground, and how would they adjust to make the starter further away

you need to shim the starter a little farther away from the flex plate the bendix is probably getting stuck in the flex plate when you go to start it and when it starts the it spins the bendix and make the screeching sound. you can get starter shims at the local parts store they go between the block and the starter. Takes about 15 min to install.

That sounds like a starter to flexplate noise by your description. Easy fix,  A Vette for 3500.00?  Good deal.

If that flex plate isn't already toast, it will be soon.  Every time it spins and screeches it's screwing up the teeth a little more.  It doesn't take much to totally wreck the teeth.  I've finished one off before.

The guy said he put a mild cam in as well, and it did not really give a very deep throaty noise, im just making sure thats ok, and thanks, that sounds pretty accurate
