78 bird colors
« on: July 25, 2016, 04:31:30 PM »
New to the forum. Bought a 79 new right out of high school, but really wanted a 78 but could not find one. Now 38 years later I finally have my 78.  Mostly a solid daily driver (what I wanted, no trailer queen). Question: it is cameo white with blue bird. The interior was switched to black from light blue (based on a few scratches).  Based on the chickenalizer, the blue bird was not offered in 78? True or false.

Thinking of changing the decals to the charcoal/red, as a more manly color.

Thanks!

I would have to say that it was offered in '78.  My reasoning behind it is when you look at the available colors for a '78 at Phoenix Graphix, blue was one of them.  Hope that helps...

I wouldn't treat PG listings as gospel, there's errors in there, generally not bad though.

Unsure of the question since the link you sent shows the Martinique blue bird decal for '78. This decal was likely a late addition as there was no blue decal listed in early '78 options literature and it carries a very late part number. Prior to that a Cameo white TA would use the charcoal decal, (as would the Martinique Blue TA).

Of course later it would become an option but only when using the blue interior which would not be common. Easy to check the build plate on the cowl to make sure it's actually a TA and that the interior was blue, then you'd think it would have to have blue decals, not just the bird.

But since your interior is already changed, and you don't want a blue decal anyway, the discussion is pretty much a non-event. It has clearly been repainted and it has the 1973 blue decal set anyway. So still not sure what the question was or what you wanted to know.

Sorry if I was not clear in my question. From what I have researched only the lighter blue bird decal was put on exterior color of the Martinique Blue Trans Am in 1978. The blue decal I have was only available in 73-75.

What were the bird decal color options in 1978 for a Cameo White exterior? I'm thinking it was only charcoal/red, and TA Museum also says the Non-SE gold bird?

The 73-75 blue looks OK, but I do not think it was offered in 1978?

Any and any help would be appreciated.

Here's my cowl tag. I purchased the documentation from PHS and my TA is a W72 TA.

Any idea what the "W's" in front of each of the exterior color codes means?

Thank you, Jim

Waterbased paint used. I can't make out anything else useful. Did PHS say it came with blue interior? Might have to wait until someone else with a 77 replies.

Yes, well based on that it's blue vinyl now black. Standard bird was charcoal for a white TA, you'd assume that it wasn't used for a blue interior. But I don't have that information. The build sheet would, although it wouldn't say light or dark blue, may have part number for decal if lucky.
