W72 Formula?
« on: July 22, 2008, 09:58:59 PM »
How can I tell if a 1977 Formula has the W72 package?  Is there any way other than looking at the PHS or build sheet?

Thanks,

Well, you can look at the engine code to see if it is a Y6 or YG for an engine code on the front of the block.  Check this page: http://www.78ta.com/enginecodes.php

Thanks, I looked at a one owner '77 Formula today.  It has the 400.  I could not read/see any codes on the front of the block.  I didn't try too hard.  I have asked the seller to take another look for me.  The car is decent.  It has 120k miles on the original engine/trans.

Does it have the chrome valve covers?  Also, check the number on the carb, the W72 carbs were specific to those engines.  The best way although is what Brett said.

...or the code  WA  for 4-speed. VIN should have a Z in it but does not mean it's a W72 rather a Pontiac 400 and/or W72.
