Engine Air Intake Question...(Pictures!)
« on: May 07, 2009, 11:30:17 PM »
Hello all!

I have a 1980 with the 4.9L V8.  I was going over some parts I needed for the engine compartment today.  One of the parts is the air intake hose that connects the air intake on the driver's side fender and the air cleaner assembly.  I started doing some research into locating a replacement hose and I'm thinking they don't make one anymore that goes from the 4" circle to the 2" x 6" oval on the air cleaner?  Is this what the car originally had on it?  Are they still around or not?

I located a plastic adapter that takes the 2" x 6" oval and converts it to a 4" circle, and obviously a 4" to 4" air intake hose is easier to find.  Is this the only option I have?

Thank you very much for any and all help!  I really appriciate it!

You're on the right track then as that is also the correct way to do it ;)

Thanks Jeff!

So, from the factory, the air cleaner housing should have had that plastic converter piece on it that converts it to a 4" circle?

Thanks again Jeff!

That is great news!  I was getting worried that no one sold the correct hose I needed anymore!  I can't believe that the converter piece "fell off" over the years!  When I bought the car from the original owner, he said the hose fell off/broke apart between oil changes, so I assumed it was only a hose!

Thanks again for the great news!

No problem...you got lucky finding one (they're hard to come by).

I just want to make sure, this part:

from Pete's website is the correct adapter part I need?

Thanks again,

I don't think you are correct.  My 4.9L ta I had didn't have the plastic adaptor.  If you look closely to the inlet in the pictures there's no slots in the lip where the plastic adaptor snaps into.  On my car, the end of the hose was oval just like the inlet on the air cleaner assembly.

I have a 1981 4.9 Turbo.  I believe that the standard non turbo 4.9 may have used the adapter, but I'm not 100% sure.  But the 4.9 turbo cars use an air intake hose with NO adapter and unfortunately they are no longer available new.  However every once in a while one shows up on eBay and usually sells north of $200.00.  A GREAT website for 4.9 owners is the 301 Garage.

It appears (if the car I have here is correct) that I am mistaken.

This picture is an '81 T/A (non-turbo 4.9) I just got here and it does not have an adapter...I assumed they used an adapter like earlier air cleaner assemblies.

If I'm wrong, sorry for the confusion.

you know what i suggest is cutting that metal oval part from the shaker and finding yourself a junk shaker base for a 400 block then cutting that oval piece out and welding it in place of yours, that way you can buy the plastic adapter and use the 300 4 inch hose.  If im not mistaken you cant just use the 400 shaker base becasue the mounting for the carb is in a different location so it wont line up.  Do you get what i mean.
