1970-1973 WELD ON SWAY REAR SWAY BAR BRACKET !
« on: March 23, 2010, 02:41:08 PM »
Can i please get a pic of the location of the weld on type rear sway bar bracket on the frame..I have the brackets/sway,etc... but want to be sure of their location from a original factory car..This was only done on 70-73 cars as far as I know..its not the bolt on type upper brackets.

  • Old Birds don't die-they get faster, corner harder

If your 'Bird didn't originally have the reinforced rear frame rails w/ the rear sway bar mounts, you'll have to weld a 1/8" plate to the frame to reinforce it where the mount will go. Weld the mount directly to the frame rail w/o doing this and you'll find out the hard way why you need to add the reinforcing plate.

You could also open up the frame rail, install the plate inside the rail, and then seal it up- this would give an OEM appearance but keep the cornering forces from ripping the mount out.

Geno,
I'm in the same boat. Does that 1/8 plate have to wrap the frame or are we talking about just where th3e bracket meets the frame so that the bolts dont pull thru?  I've got the rear of my car dissasembled for blasting and painting the underside and need to take care of this mount before I paint and reassemble.
Thanks
Steve

ps Know of anywhere I might get a template or tutorial for proper location of this mount?

I curently have the bolt on brackets. I had planned on drilling a couple of holes in the frame and installing those speed nuts or whatever they are called. you know, the inserts you put in with the threads and they expand when you tighten them.
Any suggestions?

as stated above unless you have reinforced frame rails those brackets will tear out....thats why i had to go with the weld on type used on early cars..70-73 i think after that they used the bolt on type
