'79 T/A project
« on: July 14, 2011, 02:18:57 AM »
As some of you may remember from my intro. post I recently picked up a '74 T/A for my personal project, and let's just say the wife wasn't as impressed as I had hoped. Well, she has finally started to see the light and has been slowly falling in love with the 2nd gens. At first I was just thinking of it as "Sweet!!! Green light for new toys!" But it has recently gone much further. After my constant pointing out of cars while driving and the various catalogs/magazine paraphernalia laying around the house she has begun spotting birds and naming the years before I see them. She recently stated that she LOVES the '79-'81 style and wanted one for herself. Hmm....did I have a problem with getting permission to buy another project?  You guessed it....no, no I did not.

For three years I have seen this car sitting at a house down the road out in the weeds. I have stopped multiple times and could never catch anyone home. I was driving by on the fourth and seen a fella out in the yard, pulled a quick u-ey and whipped in there. He said he bought it four years ago to "restore". I use that word lightly as he thought it was a '78 and was awful proud of the original "honeycomb" wheels. He started to take the interior apart and fell through the floor pan in front of the rear passenger seat. At that point he said "F-it!!" and walked away. I took a look and asked what he wanted for it. Said he wanted what he paid for it to get his money back so the lowest he could go was $200. I stood there stroking my chin like I was really contemplating it, did a couple of hmm's, while inside I was doing an Irish jig and considering wetting myself. Needless to say I hit the bank on Tuesday and drug her home. This is the first I have had time to get pictures.

She's rough, but that just makes it sweeter when ya get done. It was originally a 403 olds car, but he told me that it had been replaced before he got it with a 350. After doing some research I believe it is a late 80's 307 olds with the 7A heads. So that is going bye bye. The wife said she wants somewhat decent mileage so I will likely build up a Pontiac 350 I have sitting here out of a '74 Ventura, then stick a 4-speed auto behind it. Not really worried about being original with this one. She has pretty much made up her mind that it will be black, but she doesn't care for the gold decals and wants the burgundy decals on it. Anyone have any pictures of a black bird with burgundy decals? Anyways enough of my blah blah story. If I figured out the photobucket thing right, here are a few pictures I snapped.

Looks like a great project car. I look forward to seeing this come together. When you upload your photo to photobucket run your mouse over the pic but dont click it. There will be several links that appear below the picture click on the one that says image code and it will copy it. Then just paste the image code into the reply box and it should come out a full pic. I hope this helps. Good luck and keep us posted.

I long for the peace that only driving a t/a can bring.

Good luck!  Looks like you will have your hands full but isn't that the point?  I haven't seen a black car with burgandy decals.  I myself would go with the silver bird if she doesn't like the gold ones.  Also, there are 2 different gold ones too

I think that was basically what I did. I just uploaded them then copied the IMG code without clicking the pic. Maybe there is something I need to click when I put them into p-bucket. I'll play around later and see if I can either fix it or screw something up. HA!!! Thanks for the help though.

Yup, that makes it more interesting that's for sure.

She really dislikes any of the gold or silvers. I might be able to talk her into blue decals but she doesn't care for the amount of white in the 5 color bird. Might be able to go with the older blue bird though.  I'll just have to see how much sway I actually have in the final decision. Since this is the one that ultimately gives me the green light to build mine I better do what she wants. HAHA!!

I appreciate all the comments guys!! Can't wait for winter when I have time to hit the cars hard and heavy.

When you go to upload your photos in Photobucket, click the link for "Customize your upload options". Select something other than 100x75 (what your current settings are more than likely set to). 800x600 is reasonable although mine's set to 1024x768.

Click Save so Photobucket knows what to use next time. Now re-upload your photos - you should be good to go after that.

Black with the red/orange bird would look really good. Here's a page with one on it, along with many other 79 color combos. The black with red/orange is toward the bottom of the page: http://tran-zam.com/1979TAGallery.htm

I was wondering about that myself. Couldn't find the build sheet under any of the seats, but the fronts I do believe are not the original seats. When I start tearing into I will see if it is on top of the gas tank where I found the one on my '79 in high school. Either way I think I am gonna order the PHS soon just to know for sure. If it actually is a Y84, the wife may get vetoed on this one, restore it, and find her another '79.
