1974 Throttle cable
« on: February 12, 2013, 12:57:28 PM »
Would anybody know what I can do about this throttle cable issue I have.I have a stock 1974 firebird 400 2bbl . I have a proper 1974 valley pan and 1974 manifold(4 bbl) and a re-built quadrajet carb.I have not put this on yet because I have heard the 2bbl THROTTLE CABLE is about 1/2 inch shorter than the 4bbl cable. I have heard if you try to use the 2 bbl cable on a 4bbl the problem is you will not have enough movement in the cable to completely open the 4 bbls because the cable is that 1/2 inch to short. I would like it to look stock. Is there another cable from another G.M. car that I can look for in the auto-wreckers that will work for this application?

Do you know the exact length you need? I ordered the one Classic Industries has for $16.95(sorry can't remember the part number) but it was about 28 inches long. That wasn't nearly long enough for my 4bbl application. I had to send it back and buy one from NAPA auto parts, that was just right at about 45 inches. The cable from NAPA is about $27. You can also order online.

Factory 2bbl application measuers out to be 21 and a half inches. So I guess I need about 22 inches. The one you ordered from napa, did it come with the black plastic brackets to hook onto the firewall and trottle bracket,or did you have to rig something up??

Correction on the Classic Industries cable for $16.95, it was about 33 inches. Napa also carries one for that length. The one I ordered just came with the cable and nothing else. You can buy an adjustable throttle bracket. I found one on Ebay for $9.99. It was the "Spectre" Brand that Autozone carries I believe. It's also available at Autozone, and its like $20, if you can't find something on Ebay.
