First, welcome to 78TA.com!  Post up some pics of your ride -- we'd love to see it!  Don't be bashful!  And if you need help just ask -- we'll help out! :) :)

Now...to your question...

The way to tell an SD or HO engine is to look at the exhaust manifolds.  If the engine has exhaust manifolds that look like these below, then you need to see if the exhaust ports are round.

The ones in the pics are technically "RAIII" manifolds, which fit a D-port head -- but if the overall shape of yours is similar then you *might* have round ports.  If your exhaust manifolds don't look anything like these, then you do NOT have an SD or HO engine.

But...even if you do NOT have an SD or HO engine...AND your numbers match...then you still have a pretty desirable car.  The ONLY way you could get a 455 from the factory in 1976 was to buy a 4 speed and order the optional engine -- and from the sound of it, that's what you may well have.  Post up the first numbers of the VIN (just put XXXXX in the last 5 digits -- we don't need your serial number) and we can tell you what it's supposed to have under the hood. ;)

455 and a 4 spd?? VERY nice combo. 8)
"Reputation to protect"...I like the way you phrased that, Hammer :)

Another easy way to spot an SD455 is there would be a winning lottery ticket on the dash, a bikini model in the passenger seat, and no cops for miles ;D ;)......in other words, they're pretty rare :-[

Go and register at one of the free web picture hosting sites, like photobucket.com -- another choices is imageshack.com.  It's about like getting registered here at 78TA.com -- no big deal.  Then follow their instructions on uploading pics from your computer.  Once you have them loaded, click on the thumbnail they show you and get to the big image, then look on that page and you'll see a link for message forum use.  It will have " [ IMG]" in front of the link and "[/IMG]" at the end.  Right-click on that link and copy it, then swing over there to 78TA.com and paste it into the "reply" box.  You can use the "Preview" function to check to see that it comes up OK -- and if you have problems, just ask -- we'll help.

I'm not Hammer ;) but the VIN #'s you provided DO indicate a '76 T/A w/455 built at the Norwood plant.
