non-rally to rally gauge conversion
« on: December 01, 2007, 11:07:30 AM »
I haven't looked quite yet but I figure someone must have come across this before...

The 80 bird I'm building for my sister is a very clipped bird - only gauges are Gas, Clock and Speedo, rest are idiot lights. I have a complete gauge package out of a 79 TA. I know from looking at M&H's website that there are different harnesses for the non-rally cars vs. the rally equipped cars.

So my question is this...if you did this conversion did you need to replace the dash harness OR did you run the necessary wiring yourself to make the gauges function?

Just trying to figure out what I need to do wiring/budget wise as $625 plus shipping for the dash harness is a good chunk of change to just put in a set of gauges. There's no engine in the car - long gone so sending units aren't an issue - I'll buy new once I get an engine.

**If it helps any the car had a non-computer controlled engine.

I have not done a conversion like that myselfd, but I would think that it would be possible.  If you are going to run the wiring yourself, then you should be OK.  I think they still operate on the same principle, but instead of lighting a light, it will move a needle instead in the new gauges.

You have to change the oil sender and temperature senders.  Then you need to change the pin location for some of the wires on the white gauge connector.  That's part of it.  I haven't looked at the schematic in a long time but I remember something about changing the wires for the fuel gauge and volt meter.

I haven't done the conversion either because I haven't had to.  But it is definitely doable.  I recall helping someone with questions on this before and they successfully did it with their existing non rally gauge harness.

Thanks for the info guys. Just saved me $625 just to add the full gauge package.

I'm sure with a couple crimp connectors I can make them work.

When I get to that point I'll post up the info in case someone else looks for it - probably be spring/summer at the earliest.
