Wanted: 78 GM AM/FM/CB/8-Track Player for a TA
« on: January 21, 2007, 11:25:28 PM »
I have a client that I need to find an all-in-one head unit with the correct GM setup for a Trans Am that would have had the AM/FM/CM and 8-Track player.  I was told that it would be all in the head unit and not a seperate 8-track in the console?  I would appreciate anyones help on this or if they have one to sell or know where to get one.
hanks,
Dave Hall

Thanks for the response.  I agree that I have not either, but I was hoping we may find someone that did, or know exactly what would be correct if one did have these options.  Appreciate the help.

Hey Dave, My 78 has the am/fm/cb combo and judging from the looks of it I'm not sure they could squeeze an 8 track player into it. I dont recall seeing one either. I'll look around some too.

I thought all of the cars that came equiped with the 8 track player had it installed seperately from the radio in the map pocket location.

That's the only way I ever saw one.  Keep in mind that while today it might be possible to squeeze it all into one unit, back in the day those things were crammed full of elelctronics and there wasn't much room for an 8 track in the regular radio slot.

I'll have to check, but I'm almost certain that my 78 SE has the AM radio and 8 track in one unit.   The 76 and the 77 both have AM/FM with console 8 tracks.

Here is what I have:

The AM/FM 8-Track CB Radio was not availible in 1978 in any of the Pontiac line unless installed by the dealer and only then it shows it can be installed by the dealer on the Catalina, Bonneville, and Grand Safari.

Yes, the AM/FM 8-track could be crammed into one location, but they were asking if the AM/FM 8-track AND CB could be crammed into one location..... or maybe I misunderstood what they were asking.  Yes, the AM/FM 8-track could be one unit.

Well, I learn something ever day!  How long did they make 8-track tapes, anyway?  They were all the rage in 70-71, but it seemed like they'd fallen out of favor by 77-78 as cassettes got better.  Anybody know when they quit making them? :?

Hitman- Rick and Milly were asking if the 8 track could be in the same unit as the radio.  Also, just a useless FYI:  I had a 1978 Thunderbird Town Landau package with AM/FM/quadraphonic 8-track/cb- all in the same unit.  I don't know if GM ever did that but Ford had it as an option, I know.

The codes are listed above on that sheet, it has codes for the radios like UM1, UN3, UP5, etc.  So, look on your build sheet to find what the radio was that came in your car.
