Ground Strap
« on: July 16, 2023, 01:37:19 PM »
Regarding the strap ( about a foot in length ) on the passenger side bolted to the transmission/bell housing running to the passenger side foot well area is considered a ground. I would like to remove the end of the strap that attaches to the firewall and give it a cleaning to remove any possible built up of crud the maybe causing grounding issues.

I have inquired about this strap a while back when I was doing my engine swap and there seemed to be some concern about the bolt going into the firewall after you loosen it.  From what I remember ( from the conversation ) the reinstallation of that bolt to the firewall may not grab properly since there may not be a nut on the other end. I believe the interior carpet is on the other side since the bolt is going into the footwell area.

Is there anyone that has experience in this issue?  Thank you in advance.

I removed that ground strap from my firewall last year to clean the area good, and didn't have any issues screwing it back in.  Although, I recall it being higher up on the firewall than what you describe.  Mine, I'm sure, does not run into the passenger side foot well.  Mind you, the location "may" have changed from '78 to '80 but that I'm not certain about.  It's not a particularly long screw, either.

I just found some pics on my phone regarding the location of the bolt I'm referring to. Is this the same bolt you were mentioning Rockford?

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, tb, as it was one of those days.  The meshed ground wire is identical to the one I pulled out and cleaned at the firewall.  However, I believe that ground actually goes to my cylinder head.  Regardless, though, it was easy to remove, clean, and place back.  I will check tomorrow underneath my car to see if I have a ground wire attached to the transmission bell housing leading to the lower half of the firewall.  I'm curious myself, as I swapped engines quite some time ago and I haven't taken note if there is one.  But, it is easy to remove them and place them back at the firewall.
