« on: December 09, 2008, 08:30:27 AM »
what CFM is my stock Rochester Quadrajet, its a 403, i have one from 77' Buick riv, and the one fmo the 79' T/A...is there a differance in CFM?
Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some muscle.

I believe from 76 and up, they're all 800.

Nope...q-jets come in 2 basic versions 750 cfm and 800 cfm. The 750's are usually on 75 and earlier models, except for certain rare high performance models. Some 75 and from 76 and up got the 800's, even the 403, and even smaller engines. This info is from the how to rebuild your q-jet book by Cliff Ruggles.

well, i was going by what Hitman had told me in an old post. we all know that he knows his stuff. The L80 is a 403. Here is the link:  http://www.78ta.com/smf/index.php?topic=9739.0

I think Hitman's got it right.  Crazylock has a 79 T/A with a 403, so his carb would be 650.  The 400 in 79 was the W72 engine and that had 800.

i agree with Grand73Am. q-jets are variable cfm carbs and i think they only came in 750 and 800 max cfm ratings. if the motor only NEEDS 650 cfm, thats all it will flow but its still an 800 or 750 cfm carb. im pretty sure this is right.

Hitman is mistaken this time. There's no such thing as a 650 cfm q-jet. Only the 750 and 800 models. The engine may not use all of it, but that's the cfm they're capable of, so that's what the castings are called. You can find more info about q-jets with a google search if you like.

As for a cheap 800....if you know where there's a Pull-a-Part yard with 76-79 GM cars in it, you can get one cheap. Look for Buick, Olds, Pontiacs, since they have the gas inlet in front, which is what you need. Chevys normally have the gas inlet coming in on the passenger side. I've gotten a couple of them off of 76 Grand Prixs for example. You might have to do some accelerator linkage swapping or modding. Of course, you'll probably have to rebuild it too, unless you get lucky and find a fresh one.
Or just buy a rebuilt one from the parts store  :) .

Look at the number on the side of the carb.
Here's another link with the carb numbers for Pontiac carbs:  http://www.thepontiactransampage.com/carb_id.html
