78 Trans Am Weight
« on: December 16, 2011, 03:55:24 PM »
So I am looking through the numbers for the 1978 TA from Hitman. It says the vehicles weight was 3621 for the trans am. Why do I see so many people saying it weighs more like 4400lbs? Also I was told the car weighed different from hardtop, fisher t-top and hurst t-tops. Does anyone know these numbers?

The old owner of my TA used to race it in the 1/8 and he gave me the time slips. His weight with him in it was 3243. He was about 250lbs. Mine is a fisher t-top car. He had all the A/C components torn out all the was to the firewall and the even the brackets and lines and the little radiator. No spare tire or jack. Also I have found a few small bumper bracket that were missing and all the gauges in the dash were gone and even the plastic duct for AC/heat behind dash. I have always been told 3243 was too light for these sleds. Also doesn't the door stickers say something like 4xxx lbs?

3243 would be right with all the extra stuff taken off... the a/c compressor alone is like 20lbs or something... those things are a tank..... the entire system adds about 100lbs or so... about 30-50lbs for the spare tire stuff in the trunk, gas tank empty will weigh less than full...

The curb weight of my 75 Forumla 400 is listed at around 3600 lbs.- but given my 75 has no air, roll up windows, and a 4-speed, I'm thinking it might be a little less as well. All of those options like A/C and P/W do add weight.

the door sticker is the gross vehicle weight which is the weight of the vehicle plus occupants and other cargo as the vehicle was designed to safely carry.

Ah. Gotcha. So it's just like my other cars. Hmm.  So wtf is everyone calling then a freaking iron sled for? It's not that heavy then. The newer retro cars are almost 4k.

According to Pontiac the weight of the typical Trans Am is 3,621lbs. If you have Power windows, add 10.0lbs., if you have A/C add 108.0lbs. (good guess Evan), if you have AM/FM radio with the 8-Track add 14.4lbs., and so on. Yes, the door sticker has listed the GVW which is the weight of the car plus however many passengers it holds at 180lbs. So the Trans Am has four seats so 180x4 = 720lbs. added to the 3,621lbs. equals the 4,341lbs. they talk about.

I just weighed my stock cast intake. It weighs 54lbs completely stripped. My aluminum is 11. Now I see where replacing parts with aluminum can really help. I also have headers instead of the huge manifolds.
