Swapping Auto for Manual trans Questions
(1/1)
rickmcc3:
So I’m doing a resto mod on my 78 Trans Am, it’s a 403 k code. Wanting to know what manual 6 speed anyone has used or using? So many options, need to know what will actually marry up and work with the stock engine. Any suggestions are super welcome. For reference, read end will be swapped out with a better one in general. Engine itself will have some work down. Heads and pistons minor to end. Just better running kind of stuff. Not looking to push 700hp kind of deal. Read end will be a respectable gear ratio for accompany the 6 speed. Thanks!

For a start, it's a 403 which has no crank pilot bearing to accept a manual box as built for Autos only. If stock, then very few manual boxes will he bothered in stock form anyway, plus, it's the torque not the hp that is the issue. You could try a few Oldsmobile forums, see what the 350, even 455 guys are doing as far as modern manual swaps.

Well crap then, haha. In that case, any idea on a good 6 speed automatic transmission? Company and or brand etc.? Thanks for the info though, glad I asked here before buying a manual trans.
