Hey Cats & Kittens!
I am in the market for a 76 455 TA. I have lusted over these cars since I was in high school. I am 50 now & it is time to scratch this off my "bucket list" In a perfect world this is what I would like ...
Biggest requirement would be the less rusty the better. Original paint a plus.
Least desirable color would be black. Most would be white. I wouldn't kick it out of bed if it was silver, red or blue...
Options... More is always better for this category!
Matching numbers is VERY desirable!
Looking for a driver that may or may not need paint. Not looking for a 100 point ride. More like a nice driver that needs some love. The more complete the better. Heck I can media blast, paint & polish. But if the right shiny one came available at the right price I could be swayed!
Looking to stay around 8K for this TA. More for the right car. The price is not set in stone. I can tell you I will not be spending 15K on this machine. Unless you have a 50th Anny laying around that needs a new home...
As you can see nothing is set in stone. I will know of the right one when I see or hear about it.
Give me a PM, a call or send a note by pigeon. I am a motivated buyer.
BTW: Just talked to Hammer (Mike). He said he is going to be looking over my shoulder as I buy this car. I have to make him proud. I don't want the Hammer coming down on me! LOL

Thanks for the reply 4SPEED!
I REALLY want a 455 manual.
But like I said earlier nothing is set in stone.
That is one cherry low mile ride. I would consider it, but it is apparently not in my price range. Although the price has not been set from what I can tell. Now if it was a 455 I would be all over that car like a cover...
Should of also said I would travel for the right car. Within a semi-reasonable distance from North-central West Virginia.
The quest continues...

Hi and welcome to the forum. If you don't mind me asking why just a 76? What makes it so special to you? Is it the last year for a 455, one year only nose, options, honeycombs??? Previous ownership?
Perhaps none of my business but usually a man stuck on one year has an important reason.
-
I like the 76 because I feel it was the last muscle car look for the t/a. 77-81 is more of a sporty look to me
my 0.02
-
I have to agree with 4SPEED on this one.
I do not have a good reason for wanting a 76. I just do.
I might consider a 77, but IMHO it is more show than go. For my first muscle car I want go! LOL
I also realize that with only 200 hp, the 455 is Not true muscle car status for most people. I will leave that to the SS Chevelles, hemi equipped cars & the hot Mustangs. I dont know, I just like the looks of the 76. And I am sure if I don't like the HP of said 455, I am fairly certain it can be breathed on to produce what many would agree to be true muscle HP. I dont think I will need the extra hp, I like torque. But I reserve the right to change my mind after I live with the 455 for a while!
The 455 IS the last muscle car produced. One can argue that the later models wore that badge as well. And I would agree that considering what was being produced by the other mfg's the later model gen 2 offering from Pontiac WAS a muscle car. Although they arent a 455, just like a 455 isn't a 454, 428 or a 426 as far as HP #'s are concerned.
Another driving force behind my 76 choice is I knew a hot chick back in high school. She drove a Carousel red 76 TA. I could never figure out which was hotter. I called it a tie. ;)
The real reason is not complicated.. I just like the looks of the car. It really is that simple.
Ok, I am rambling. My apologies.

So it's the hot chic in HS. You can be honest here. LOL
I'm a 76'er to the end. No others! Maybe, if you rolled a 74 up into a ball and threw it on me...maybe. I don't know why either. My first was a 1979 black and silver formula with a sick 301. The 76's just speak to me. I'd save every single one that I could. I bet I've bought, sold and owned 15 76's alone.
Anywho... Not to steal your post but welcome to the forum and the ever so elite 76 club. Maybe Hitman will give us our own room. LOL

Looks like this car was originally Silver. Seller states numbers matching. Rear console too. If it does not sell perhaps you can work something out.
Good Luck

He has it listed on craigs list.

Gentleman.
That is the very TA that I called Hammer on. Although the owner did not misrepresent it, I dont think he was completely knowledgeable on what he has. Too many details didn't add up.
I did talk to the owner at great length on it. That was before I talked to Mike. After Mike & I chatted I decided to pass it up.
Maybe I am making a mistake, since no other TA 455's are available. Mike valued that ride between 7 to 8k. A far cry from 12k.
I will be watching the ending of the auction with great interest.

I have a lot of respect for Hammer, but I would love to find a driver like that for 8k on a true numbers match 455 car. It all depends how much you want to spend to fix up what you buy. Do your research and you will see what they go for.
Its cheaper in the long run to buy one thats already done.
Just my two cents.

Two cent opinions always taken & digested on this end. From your sig. you have 4 76 TA's. How yummy is that! That white 76 sounds like exactly what I want! Any for sale? LOL
I agree completely with what you say Joe. I really do not mind opening up the wallet wider IF, and I repeat IF I find what I want. At this point I am lucky to find ANY 76 TA's for sale. They are out there, most are black (least desirable along with orange) most are automatics. I know what I want & I guess I will be holding out ( if I have to spend big bucks) for one that meats my criteria. (I really want a white one!) Several 76's are being sold by dealers. Big bucks. I am not spending 25-50K on this car. My head & wallet will not allow it!! Wish I had a fatter wallet....
I do thank all the posts directing me to TA's from various destinations. I have looked at each & every one of them. Most I have seen. Some I have not. So far no warm fuzzies! Keep the suggestions coming!
Also I have been giving the 77/8/9 models a second look. I did see a nice 79 white one but it was a automatic. My search is only a week old, or so. I have to remind myself not to get impatient.
Thanks for the comments. I really do appreciate them!

I will pass on that also. I could not see out the windshield because of the hood! LOL
I did the exact flares (F&R of wheel) to my 74 Mustang 2. It was bitchen...
I did find this roller. Talked to him today. Real good interior. After decoding the data plate it is suppose to have... drum roll please... A white exterior & a WHITE interior. Is that yummies or what? Original 455 manual. buckets & no other options.

It was the one you posted earlier, The car looks to be solid. lol

Well the orange one in Connecticut has a pretty good body. Comes with a 400 but the original 455 is included. Needs a total interior. All rubber parts replaced. Arizona is not a kind place for a car with the exception being to sheetmetal. Not to mention a new paint job.
Too much additional money & work for the 10K price tag.
The quest continues.

Thats what I was worried about.

i thought you were looking for something ready to drive.
-
i thought you were looking for something ready to drive.
Hada76 that was & still is the plan. Although I cannot seem to find what I want in a resto-drivable car in the 10K price range. Maybe my wants and desires are too strict? Probably. (#'s matching,455, 4sp., white on white, tilt,pw,pdl,) I have also relaxed, to some degree, my list of wants. I know the car is out there, in my price range, but how long am I going to wait? I do not have the luxury of time. Since I am in the agricultural industry, once spring breaks, I wont be able to travel until late June. I prefer to have something by the middle of February.
So I am also considering a project. A complete non-runner, or various stages of disrepair. And if cheap enough non numbers matching. I really want it to be matching though. Prefer no black cars & really prefer 4 sp. Those 3 requirements alone removes most of the cars that have come across my radar. And I haven't even included the most important requirement. Being close enough that I can look at it. So far only one car meets all those requirements & it is a project and it is 12 hours away.
The quest continues...

Good score Shanster!
I called & talked to him. Sending pics tomorrow.
At first glance it appears this is not a 50th anny. No gold dash. But who knows. I dont think he has the PHS documents so the only thing I will be able to go from is the vin & the cowl tag.
He sez rough interior but he has most of the new pieces parts that go with the car. No rust & faded paint.
I will know more tomorrow, hopefully.
Thanks Shank.

Squirrel, yes you lucked out in finding the car that you wanted that is really close to you. I am jealous!
My hunt for a 76 455 is not going as planned. Many are over priced, most aren't what they appear to be (25th clones being passed as the real deal), and ALL of them are WAY to far for me to look at.
I really wonder what happened to all the TA's that were in West Virginia? Must have went to the crusher...
I am still on the hunt. In fact I have included the 77/8/9 TA's as well as some late 79/80 Z28's and a El Camino year or two.
I bet there is one in my hometown, I just have to ferret it out! LOL

I want to thank the TA community in their help in finding my ultimate TA. Your a fine group of individuals & I am honored to be in your "presence".
I leave tomorrow early Am for a 8 hr drive to New York to pick up a 76 400 4sp, white exterior & blue & white interior project car.
For some silly reason I have already started to formulate plans on my second project. When I jump in, I traditionally jump in the deep end!
This thread is officially closed. I will open up a new one with the restoration of the above car.
