Too many rpm
« on: September 10, 2006, 09:46:57 PM »
Last night I was lightin 'em up in first gear to 5000 rpm then went to bang second and didn't find it (being a 28 year old tranny).  Well, my foot had other ideas and hit the floor for a split second until it realized she wasn't in gear.  My tachometer sky rocketed to almost 6500 rpm.  I got it home and opened the hood and noticed a tapping coming from the valves.  Now, before I almost blew 'er up, it had a very slight tapping noise but nothing out of the ordinary.  Now its a more noticeable sound and I'm not an engine builder so I was wondering what you guys thought.

I haven't had it checked out yet but it seems like it randomly taps only when cold.  Once the engine's at operating temp. it makes all the right noises

Maybe a rev limiter is  your next purchase!!
Glad nothing seems to be broke.

You may need to re-adjust your lifters.  Sometimes the rocker arm gets a little worn and you will hear small tap when its cold.
