Another oil question
« on: October 04, 2006, 10:05:12 PM »
Being that this is my first car, I've been running royal purple 20w-50 in my 78 T/A for the last 1,000 miles.  I really like it but it's too freakin' expensive because my car sees about 1,000 miles a month and it's gonna start burning a hole in my pocket.

What kind of oil do you guys run?

20 weight oil is for racing only!

depending on your climate, 10w-30 and 10-40 are both good. i'm using 5w-30 right now because i live in california and its starting to get coooold, and 6 am engine starts like a thinner weight.

I forgot to mention, my motor is not the original.  It was built for drag racing and was running consistent 12.30's with an automatic 76 firebird.

So, its far from stock and the builder recommended 20w-50.  I believe a thinner weight may be the way to go though, especially with the weather cooling down.

 I appreciate your opinions.

I too have a built engine (455) and PO instructed running Valv. 50 wt.  The PO, really two POs ago basically just built my TA for the track.  Anyway I made the decision to wean it back to Valv. 20-50 Rcacing Oil, as I only occasionally run it hard.

The scary thing about my change is the PO's instructions to only use 50 wt.   My plan will probably be run the 20-50 until spring and maybe change to Valv. 10-50 if they make it.   I'll put maybe 5K miles on the car p/ year.

From the minnimal research I have done the heavier oil shoud stick better but is obviously will be thicker in the pan at start-up.  Because my start-ups are a few times a month I like the heavier oil and am careful not to start it if its ........say less than 40 degrees.

I would be curious opinions on this strategy.
