Title: 301 to 400 Power steering question
Post by: Atticus80pacecar on March 31, 2020, 04:16:39 PM
If anyone has done a 301 to 400 swap please chime in!

Regarding the power steering system... I know that the power steering pump I have for the 400 uses as larger size fitting than the 301 pump did (not sure size, it's just bigger). Is the fitting on the power steering gear box also different from 301 to 400 cars?

Ultimately I'm just looking for the part number for the lower power steering pump pressure line assembly that would work between my new pump, and the 301 gearbox fitting.

If the 301 steering gearbox is identical to the 400, I would just need the pressure line for a 400 car,  correct?

Edit::  Alternatively...Can I just swap the entire fitting from the old pump to the new one (big hex on rear of pump that the line actually goes into), then just order a replacement line for a 1980 301 car? This seems like it may be the simplest solution, if there isn't any harm in doing it that way.

Thanks in advance!

Update in case anyone else had this question...

You can just swap the 1" hex fitting on the back of the power steering pump, then use a replacement line exactly like the one that came out.

Just be careful as that fitting is spring loaded, so back it out slowly and it'll be an easy swap!
