And for those that didn't know, the movie was originally going to have a 1976 50th Anniversary with a 455, but high demand for the cars on the civilian market pushed the movie back to 1977, and since the 400 wasn't the powertrain that they felt would offer the type of performance they needed, they put a 455 from 76 into the 77

Yeah, hear something different all the time. I've heard so many different stories.

Who really knows?

Hal said he doesn't remember. He just took whatever Pontiac gave him.

To answer your question correctly without getting all G5 classified and Area 51 conspiracy on you.

SATB - 1977  Special edition T-top auto 400 (6.6 litre)

SATB II - 1980 Special Edition T-top auto 301 turbo

At least that was what they wanted you to believe the car was in both movies, regardless of what parts, motors, NOS, year, etc people have been told throughout the years.

I thought they were factory except the producer wanted one with 750 hp for the bridge jump?
Like mentioned there's more theories on this than Roswell

I have also heard all kinds of variations on how many cars the producers got from Pontiac. Some say 3. some say 5.  All of the stories end the same way- by the end of the movie only one was left and barely running on canniballized parts from the others!  Who knows?

Hal told at us the POCI convention that they "pushed" the car into the last scene with Burt in it.

And yeah, they put a SBC NASCAR motor in the jump car. He said the Pontiac motor wouldn't get the car up to speed fast enough. And that car was trashed as soon as it landed.

One thing for sure, the cars were crushed/destroyed after filming. From the way Hal talks, I don't think there was much left to crush.

He did say that the reason he wanted the TA was because he saw a picture of one of those black and gold TA's with the T tops. He didn't say if it was a 76 or 77. I'm thinkng it's this picture. He thought that Burt would look sexy coming up out of T tops.

I do know that NPD has the car that was given to Burt Reynolds for doing the first movie.  It was in their showroom in Michigan.  All documented.

Wait,You mean it wasn't a Smokey and Bandit Trans Am? I thought Burt Reynolds invented the Trans Am and designed it in black and gold just for the movie? Wow!

The one Sally got into after being picked up on the roadside in a wedding dress had 76 door panel clips. I don't know how much driving Burt Reynolds did in any of the movies, he was mostly sitting in one strapped to a flatbed. So my answer to the question "What years of Trans Am did Burt Reynolds drive as the Bandit" is NONE.

you can see him in at least a couple of these clips, he was said to have done alot of the driving. (gotta love when the rear tire comes off the ground in the hard right turn at 2:20, wonder if frame connectors had something to do with that?) no computer gen special effects here

  Unfortunately I was almost quoting a few people. Every black trans am is a burt reynolds trans am. It gets so old. Thats why even if the paint job was free and done by the best painter but it had to be in black I would say"no thanks,ill keep the primer". Too many ignorant people. I understand someone not actually knowing but the ones who argue with you and say there was no black and gold ta until burt reynolds made the movie I just get angry.

cool video. I think I saw a few shots where he was missing the front passenger wheel flare? Man they drove those things hard. I have NEVER seen the movies. LOL. Don't shoot me.

Even though Burt didn't drive it, no one is mentioning the T/A in Smokey and The Bandit 3 :) :) :)

Yeah I understand that completely. It's just like all other pop culture, too many people who thinks somethings cool but no nothing really about it. I've had to correct people on it too. It also defames other T/A's unfortunately. For being so rare, you see WAY more Y82's online than other regular cars because everyone wants a bandit car. I love the Y82's and would love to have one, but I liked them before I had ever seen the movie. I love the movie too btw lol

1=76/77
2=80TTA
3=83
for hooper 78
the one NPD owns is the first y84 78 given to burt which has been stated by me on this site and others.burts owned 1 77,2 78s,1 79 that he gave to his sister,2 80 TTA 1 he gave to jerry,an 81 TTA that was sold to his neighbor then to online musuem then to a casino

And the one sold to a casino was sold to an individual who also owns the infamous 76 prototype. He had the 81 at POCI in Bowling Green, KY last year and it was signed in large font sharper on the center console.

The casino went bankrupt and sold everything.  I posted pics a few years ago of that car while we were at the casino in Deadwood.  It had a plaque that read that this was the car given to Burt to drive back and forth while filming.

And all of this BS about SATB is the reason I don't want a Black T/A anymore...  I'm sure a lot of people that own these cars fell in love with them from the movie, myself included.  Always wanted an SE up until the point thaty I got seriously into reworking my car.  Then I quickly realized everyone has a black T/A. Mine was originally Mayan Red, so it's goiong back to Mayan Red.  Just my Opinion :)

yeap which was impossible to have a 81 during filming of part 2 as production started in nov of 79-march of 80 which i talked about here and iver at the bandit run at motortopia page ,the car isnt the one burt drove back and forth to the set he drove the 80 back and forth to the set then gave it to jerry after filming as he was promised a 81 when they hit so after the famous 81 photo op burt received the 81 and the rest is history so this 81 was never used during filming to go back and forth to the set i think it got confused with the 80 that he did drive back and forth that he gave jerry

Yep- but I just wrote what was on the board beside the car.  Couldn't actually be the car he used unless Burt travelled in time, got the '81 and took it back to 1979.  It did have the original title in Burt's name on display too.

And didn't the 80 Burt gave to Jerry end up in the Nashville Hall of Fame, then to storage where it went under water during the flood a couple years ago? Lottie Reed said she drove one her dad gave her to take to school but was afraid people  would follow her home, so they donated it to the museum. (or something like that, I heard her tell the story in Nashville)

yeap i reported that yrs ago when that 81 of burts first came around claiming it was used back and forth to the set...im also the one who busted the CMHF in lying and sating it was used in the movie as well and a family member knew jerry pretty well and he told him burt gave it to him and he gave it to his daughter but took it back cause ppl where following her hime from school and stuff so he had it put on display there,she sup to still own it and talked about bring it out.when i talked to CMHF they said they have no intentions of ever displaying it again and it wasnt harmed in the nashville flood
