Title: 1978 ford LTD II 2 door for sale
Post by: y88rick on March 02, 2012, 07:19:48 AM
Had to help my dad out with some trouble. So I loaned him money. Instead of him paying me back I took his LTD project to sell. so its a very solid car would trade for a trans am or i think this thing is worth around 2500 considering what we paid to get it vs how hard they are to find i think that is fair to very cheap. interior is all there minus carpet and i think head liner. will need carb replaced as it just spits gas out the top of it. but this is a super solid car.

Interesting find. I did not recall Ford making a 2 door LTD. Learn something everyday.

Good luck with your sale. Which engine and transmission does it have? Are they original to the car? Is all the AC stuff still there?

I've actual seen this car.
For the year, it's really clean.
I mean --- really clean.
What happened to the other window?

it has a 351 2bbl in it and yes all the a/c stuff is there. dont remember which 351 it is but its not the junk one which i believe would be the modified. i think its a 351w in it. and as far as i know its the original engine to it. looks pretty dang unmolested in there.

I had one back in '79.  It had the 351W (Windsor) 2 bbl with a FMX transmission.

the windsor is the weak one, not junk just weak, the 351m is the cleveland motor, much more stout the valve covers are larger on the cleveland than the windsor

A 351C (Cleveland) was the shortstroke, performance engine and the most sought-after.  The 351W (Windsor) was not weak, but not tuned to 351C specs either.  The least desirable was the 351M (modified) which was a hybrid 351/400 setup.  It was never great at anything.  There were three totally separate 351's.  I've had them all.

Good luck with the LTD II sale.   They are pretty cool in their own way.

did you not find the 351w weak? the exhaust ports were so small they sufficated, not knocking just voicing opinion

I've had two of them with W engines besides the LTD II.  1978 T-bird and a 1986 F-150.  They suffered from lack of breathing, especially the 2 bbl T-bird.  The F-150 came factory with a Holley 750 4 bbl.  But the heads were restrictive on take-off.  But they could both run the higher rpm's with no strain.  It just took a while to get to a high speed  ;D  The Cleveland engines were awesome.  I had one in a 1968 Torino fastback and an implant in a 1968 F-100.  Talk about g-force on take-off!!!  They were awesome.  Now for the 351M:  it had to be the most disappointing Ford engine I have ever had.  No torque to speak of,  high speeds were a noisy, vibrating chunk of metal.  Total disappointment.  Just mt personal experiences.  I drove the F150 Windsor for over 314,000 miles and not once even removed a valve cover.  Never had a single mechanical problem with that truck right up until I sold it.

okay, not my imagination with the small ports and poor breathing, i once took a 351w and port matched it til i ground through the runners and had to weld and regrind, then match ported the exhaust, installed headers whoa what a wake up call, i do not knock fords with exception to my 6.0 diesel dually and my box truck with a 5.4 (3rd engine in 200k) i have made some serious hp with the old 390 and had some opportunity with 289

you got it man. its very unfortunate for him and well my uncle and I were looking very forward to helping him get it done. part of me wants to just stick it in the back of my barn for him but at the same time, the money I used to help him out is the money i was saving up for another trans am and also my oh crap the furnace broke money too.

i would consider trading this for a 79-81 as well as other project cars or even something newer that i could just sell. this was my dads project though cool and unique its just not what i want to do at all. funny thing is i paid for this car 2 times and when i think about that boy does it suck lol.

I dont mind. so i do have a large change jar i had been saving up just about full that should bring me atleast $100 towards one lol
I do have a set of 8in 78-79 snowflakes in nice shape if anyone wanted to trade even up for a project car and i'll even toss in my jar O' change lol

Well it all depends on what ya want I suppose.  I commend you for helping out your dad, that says alot about you as a person.  I had a 09 G8 6.0 and loved it but sold it because thats not what I wanted to do and it freed up a lot of cash for other things that were important, I suppose you could say I took a loss but long term it was a gain. I realized it was stupid to pay car payments on a car that only came out in nice weather. It's all about priorites.

I just sold my TATA because I knew financially it was not a feasable project and I needed to use that money for other more important things.  My financial situation changed and so I needed to re evaluate.  I lucked out and found a good solid 81.  This may sound harsh but I guess my point is don't complain about no TA project when you have a nice new and expensive 2011 Challenger in the garage.  Its obvious the Challenger is a higher priority, and thats cool, they are hot cars, by far my fav retro looking car.

im not complaining by anymeans atleast i have something to drive thats for sure. i know one day i'll have another ta just only time will tell when that will be you know. if "S" hit the fan then yes the challenger, my camper, my truck -maybe, my wifes car her seadoo's would all go. i say maybe to the truck as thats paid off and dont owe me a dime. but thats my camper, wood, drywall, and potentially parts and project car hauler so thats a means of importance the rest all have payments. funny though just 2 years ago the only payment i had was on the camper now it seams as if everything has a payment but keeping in mind i sold a ton of stuff to pay for a business so i cant complain though it did suck no longer having liquid assets and 5 t/a's LOL

no worries Rick, its the american way i am sure most have been in a position where somethings were important and some were "i wish i had the $$ to have" i have had a 7 series beamer for 20 years and one year the wife was in France, i got into a jam and sold my 740 and put the $$ in the bank, bought her a sebring convertible and that was that, i had to do what i had to do, i have never had car payments so the 7 serie money was much better off in the bank and had a $5k sebring  (1 third cost of beamer) so life goes on, wife was pissed for a week but loved the Florida sunshine with convertible i bounced back and picked up a s55 benz and she is happy again. DONT WORRY BE HAPPY

i miss the no car payment days. but for what its worth the one payment i have gives me big time self satisfaction kind of makes me feel like yeah i made it. but if i had the money to buy it in cash, it would have been a 70-73 t/a hands down lol. for now i'll live it up. I did try that finance the old car you want place but they were so specific it was unreal. they would not say you are approved up to this much so go shopping. it was more like we need to know what it is all the details and the appraisale of it and then we will let you know what we think from there.
