Replace OR Repair???? Picture included
« on: July 01, 2010, 05:56:47 PM »
See the front driver side wheel flare?

Should we just repair it with fiberglass or get a new/used flare.

Someone told me to repair it with fiberglass.

Need your opinion, please!! ;D

I would get new.  They are fairly inexpensive compared to a botched FG repair.

I would replace the worthless guy on the left.  What's he doing, sleeping? ;D

By the way, they should have jackstands under there.

If those flares are fiberglass, I'd repair it with fiberglass. It wouldn't be difficult, and you know it fits  :) .

Frank was just putting the jack stands under there when I took this picture.  They were behind him.  My son just went under there, like a dough dough head!

He always uses jack stands.

If its the original urathane I'd have it repaired. If the flare is fibreglass, I'd just get a replacement.

Get a set of ramps.  It's easier on the car.  It's good to see your son taking interest!!!!  He's a trans am owner of the future....when these cars get close to 100 years old!!!

I would repair it. Fiberglass on the back side and a small amout of filler to smooth it out on the front. sand it leaving it rough where the fiberglass will be applied so it holds well. If there is chunks missing, use tape on the front to give it something to hold the shape. The tape usually pulls off after the resin is dry. then sand it smooth and use a small amout of filler to blend. Clean things good after any sanding with Laquer thinner or a pre paint prep cleaner.
I repaired all of mine and they turned out nice. My front lower spoiler was crack up pretty bad and I was able to repair it with the same method with good success. I'm not a expert body guy, but its not all that hard.
I try to repair things like this when I can as I am usually not happy with the way repop parts fit.

I'd say it could be repaired but keep in mind they are not fiberglass, they are ABS plastic.

Heidi,

If you do decide to replace it with aftermarket I'd gladly buy it from you - my driver's side flare doesn't fit well and needs the inner core to be able to pull it tight to the fender:
