Worn Turn Signal Lever
« on: March 01, 2012, 11:15:31 AM »
I'm in the process of disassembling my 81' steering column to fix the turn signal lever (it will not engage into left). At first I thought the problem was with the turn signal mechanism, but now that I have the column apart, I found the mechanism is fine. The problem is with the high mean lever pivot, it has so much play in it that you cannot bring the lever down enough to make the lever pivot click the arm attached to the turn signal mechanism. (hope this makes sense) Is there a way to tighten the pivot/high beam lever portion to remove the wobbling that is causing the problem?

Thanks!

Discard my question, I tested the lever with a new switch and it worked. Even though the original switch mechanically worked, it must have distorted over time.

How did you go about changing the switch out.  Did you have to re-pin the new switch, or did you buy one with the harness already installed?
Thanks.

They should come like this, this is for cruise control, the one on the right is the tilt lever.

The switch mechanism (not to be confused with the lever) comes with the wire harness pinned correctly for the car. The part is about $20.

I'm rebuilding the entire tilt column following these instructions: http://transamcountry.com/community/index.php?topic=24962.0 If you just want to fix the turn signal switch mechanism, then you can stop about 1/4 down the page, stop just before the step to remove the "ignition lock and warning buzzer switch". The switch will come with a new wire harness with all the pins where they need to be that snakes through the column to below the middle column collar. The photos show a pre 79 column, where the turn lever is screwed directly to the turn switch mechanism. 79 and up cars are different in that there's a pivot arm that connects the turn lever to the turn signal mechanism. This El Camino site has some good photos of the pivot lever: http://www.elcaminocentral.com/showthread.php?t=27192 Sometimes the screw that holds this pivot lever is just loose and needs re-tightened, but in my case the white plastic turn signal mechanism was over fatigued and needed replaced.

If your tilt is sloppy, it's definitely worth doing a compete tear down, there are 4 external torx (E8 socket) bolts that hold the tilt to the column that tend to get loose. Mine were so loose you could pick up the column and see about 1/8" of movement at the tilt area. Folks recommend a couple drops of blue loctite on the bolts when you put them back. Also make sure you don't over tighten them, they can only handle about 10 ft lbs.

The lock plate and the column collar require special steering wheel puller tools. I got a cheap set of these tools at my local harbor store for less than $30. Make sure the set you get has both a "steering wheel puller" and "steering wheel lock plate compressor". If you do the complete tear down, there's one more tool you need to remove the pivot pins (Lisle 19940 pivot pin remover), which on Amazon is less than $7 and worth every penny.

Here's a stock photo of what the switch mechanism with harness looks like.

Thanks Angelo!!!  I picked up just the white plastic part, think it is called a cancel cam without the wires.  To use it, it appears I would have to remove the wires from the existing cam and re-pin them in the new one.  Looks like a pain and think I will just get one with the wiring harness.  Just guess I will have to drop the column to change it out.  Mine is a 79 and the plastic part the ball fits into wore out and could not be tighten, so the lever would stick at first and now just hangs down and will not engage the blinker.

you had me nervous there for a minute saying the lever was the issue and yes the turn signal switch comes with harness, as for the tilt loosness, yes the torx bolts do come loose and have seen many shops (bad shops) tell customer you need to rebuild column when in essence you are spot on, a bit o loc-tite and snug them up. good job there glad you solved it

I wouldn't even try to fix the cancel cam, that whole mechanism is subject to wear, may as well replace it all including the wires. Even the hazard and horn switch plugs into it. They do make a cheaper version of the same mechanism, e.g. napa/autozone has a pro version and a budget version for about $10-13. I'd get the more expensive $20, for a few bucks more in hopes you don't have to have to do this job again.

I sound like an expert but realy this is al just fresh in my head.

Thanks

Autozone. Checking my receipts it was $26, same one from rockauto ending with 324 in part number is $30. I got the one without cornering lights.

My bad, the ignition switches that are budget priced 10-13 i mixed up with the turn signal switch pricing.
