1978 factory t/a steering wheel parts diagram?
« on: March 22, 2012, 11:39:58 PM »
Hi gang,
Our 78 t/a has an aftermarket steering wheel. We would like to install the factory wheel assembly. Can someone show us what parts we will need ,besides the steering wheel itself. We are concerned with how it mounts to the tilt column, what is involved with the horn assembly, and how does the horn button attach to the steering wheel.

Thanks for the help!

Wow I never figured you had to completely take apart the column to put a new wheel on

darn, it looks like we are missing the hub that the steering wheel will mount to. I guess the previous owner trashed it when they installed the aftermarket wheel.   :'(

btw, this is the wheel we will be using. Its a Grant 1014. Anyone have one? Any input on how it looks/feels in person? Grant advertises it as a "classic T/A wheel" with real stitching  and leather grip.

we also wanted to note that the steering does not lock with the key out, is that normal? I thought GM had locking steering columns by 1978...

Maybe someone has one laying around.

so if the column isnt locking with the key out, what should we be looking at to be the problem? (and this is a manual 4 speed car, if it matters...)

I have the Grant wheel on my car it's a little thicker than that of a stock on but i like the feel of it. I'm having a back up leather wrapped. over all I think it's pretty good.
