403 Olds Oil Filter Adapter With Oil Cooler Feed Provision
« on: February 18, 2021, 11:37:18 PM »
Greetings All,

Wondering if anyone can tell me the part number for this animal. Engine is out of the car and an errant cart hit the adapter and cracked it. Even better, does anyone have one for sale. I believe the same adapter was used on some 350 Olds diesels.

Thanks everyone.

Don

You can buy them new but should also be extremely common used. GM 6438195

Thank you for your quick reply. However, you may have been a bit too quick. The part number and picture you posted is for the standard filter adapter, not the one with oil cooler provision.

If I believe correctly, the only 403 Olds powered Firebirds to use the oil cooler are those spec'd with the WS6 package which included the 3.23 rear axle ratio. This would also have required the matching engine cooling radiator, ( with a heat exchanger in each tank), and the necessary hard lines and hoses.

Anyone?

Regards
Don

Sorry, yes, was racing around heading out door to work and didn't read it properly. Do you mean the extension like used in motor homes?

Nope, never seen one of those on these. Diesel only.

That's the part, but I assure you, it's not diesel only.   The car in question is a late 1979 production Trans-Am ordered with Bright Red paint, WS6, rear window defroster, radio delete and grey decal package. At the time of ordering, the original purchaser also specified grey wheels.  The engine cooling radiator has the regular transmission oil cooler with 1/2 -20 fittings in one tank, and 5/8-18 fittings in the other tank to accept the engine oil cooler lines.

My thinking is the non WS6 cars with the 2.41 rear axle did not receive the engine oil cooler, only the WS6 cars with 3.23 axle ratio.

Like I said, haven't seen it before and can't recall any record of it on these, or the need. Towing package?

No towing package on this car.

Beginning to wonder if it is a Canadian market thing.

No idea but interested, can't recall seeing a second combination of cooling lines to the opposite side of radiator as well. I would have thought Canada was worse, as in more likely to need a block heater than extra cooling!

There's like 3 active members on this board but hopefully someone will chime in that knows something. Also, note that the ebay link above mentions a different part number to that cast into it, neither feature with useful results when searched.

Nearly all automotive forums have experienced attendance drops since the advent of social media....which are filled with automotive pages. The answers you get there are typically hit or miss as far as accurate answers...and even the right ones get buried in threads beneath jokes, bs comments, and incorrect information.

That being said...you did get a fast reply...and a knowledgeable one at that. Aus78Formula is probably the most experienced I've seen when it comes to the Olds 403, among other things.

I can't add much to what he has already stated other than I myself have had a '79 T/A in the past. Factory Olds 403 w/WS6 package, though the factory rear gear ratio on that car was 2.73 within the disc brake axle.
It did not have the additional provision you are looking for either.

Thanks, but I'm only keen on discussing these things and learning trivial details.

I have seen oil filter relocation kits before but not exactly like this one but I'm not sure if it was for a Chevy block or if it was offered for nay of them. I had at one time, thought about doing the conversion but it really isn't necessary for me to do it. Other than verifying that I've seen them before, I'm no damn help at all and it now makes the tally 5  ;)
