The front uses a 4x10 and the rear uses a 6x9 (usually two). I am assuming that your car is a '78 or '79 (based on your user name).

All I have are 2 cheap best buy pioneer 6x9's in the rear... They work great with less than 100 bucks spent; but someone did temporarily donate a deck to me and there was an amp in there already.

Yep (2) 6x9's in the rear and they mount from underneath the package tray, not from the top side. If you're running any kind of exhaust system that isn't quieter than a mouse then you may want to consider adding an amp into the mix.

I had to as the Pypes Street Pros drone at highway speeds and the Pioneer head unit I have (which puts out 50Wx4) couldn't keep up so I added a 600Wx4 amp in the trunk and that took care of a multitude of issues ;D

News to me, lol when I got em they seemed to go in from the top without a problem...they don't look bad so I guess I'll leave it.

It's entirely possible your package tray was hacked by a PO, otherwise they wouldn't fit trying to stuff a 6x9 into the opening from the top side. The 6x9's gotta go under the package tray and the screws would go in from the top side. Several owners have found this out the hard way ;)

Well unless your 6x9's were really 6x8's, then I could see them fitting from the top side...
