Just got done painting 3 of the 4 rims, I'm waiting on the 4th to dry off before I mask and spray it...

thanks rainman! i am very happy with the combo too. if you remember i had a heck of a time deciding what decals to use when i repainted it. they are supposed to be gold but that was just too tacky with the red interior in my opinion. i'm glad i listened to all the people who said "it's your car, do what you want"
i usually dont like the blue t/a's but yours is an exception, those pics you posted are great! the car really pops out at ya! :o beautifull background too!

The red is what does it for me . And not having the usual gold wheels makes it very unique . It amazes me just how well that combo turned out ,and to boot its one of a kind ,not even the factory thought of that combo .
I am not a huge fan of blue either to tell you the truth .
Because I have a black interior ,all options are open for me . I was very tempted to paint mine black and do the same bird ,as copying is the best compliment .I suspect we would have the only 2 with that paint ,wheel and bird combo ,but I feel it should stay blue in order to not start a s#^* storm lol
I have lost count of how many compliments the Marty gets . Its pretty amazing how these cars went from ,hey every one and his brother has one ,to wow what the hell is that thing !
-
yeah, i'm surprised the factory didn't offer this combo either, you'd think even in the 70's black/red/silver would have been a popular combo. they allowed some pretty ugly combos back then!
i bought the car with the intention of painting it silver, my first t/a in high school was a silver on red 78 w72 t top t/a. i REALLLY miss that car & absolutely love that color combo (my fav for a t/a) after tons of contenplating what to do, i decided to keep the car black since it was a low mile #'s matching car, i even bought the gold decals...but at the last minute i asked brett if i could exchange the decals for the charcoal/red ones & decided to make it a custom combo that sort of resembled my old silver t/a. again, i am very happy with the results & like you, i lost count of the compliments i get on it.
i would not have any problem with you doing the same color on your car, it would be different since you have black interior. if mine was black i would have went with the gold decals, it's the red interior that made me decide against the gold. FWIW, i would keep your blue if thats the original color, it is a nice looking combo.
also, my color combo is not unique, i have seen one or 2 others this color but not with the 8" silver snowflakes & they were alot rougher with black interior, they didn't stand out quite like mine does.
here's a pic of my old silver t/a, one with my x girlfriend, sure do mis her......the car that is! ;) ;D

Great cars, here is one of mine. Now can I get the name and number of the girl in the pic please.
-
who is she
she's my x, was my junior high & high school sweetheart, but then she ended up being, lets just say, not so sweet anymore! :'( i had a bunch of pics with her & my t/a but i seem to have lost them over the years, that is the only one left.
scottd3, your t/a turned out very nice! did you use the black seats i sold ya?
-
I am in line for her phone # allso. Hey scott nice ride by the way.
-
Thanks guy's. I mixed and matched the seats with my originals, I think I am going to get them recovered over the winter if I can get the original material.
-
WERE are the int pics scott.
-
also, my color combo is not unique, i have seen one or 2 others this color but not with the 8" silver snowflakes & they were alot rougher with black interior, they didn't stand out quite like mine does.
I suspected there had to be a few other black T/A owners who put that bird on . But you are the first that I have seen with the silver wheels ,which just looks cool imo .
I agree the red interior helps also ,just adds to the color combo . If I did it ,I agrree it wouldn't quite be the same ,but I could live with it

Good job Rick ,that paint looks beautiful .
Man is there anything you can't do?
-
i cannot stitch interior while the upholstery guys were in the house baking pies with mom and learning how to stitch seat covers, i was too busy shoveling the driveway so we could work on the cars for dad.
wish i would have spent a little more time with mom lol.
dave, I have alot more pictures of it in my thread under resto projects. the only way you can see a full size pic is to click on the picture as i cannot down size them or you'd see only a head light in my postings.
-
i forgot rainman there is one more thing that i cannot seem to do either, that is keep my wife happy all the time lol. especially right now or since july as i have been on the y82 every chance i can get and when im not on it, i have been talking about how i need to be on it and i just want it done blah blah blah

Don't beat yourself up about that one Rick . All woman are bi polar and should be on meds if there not already . A medicated woman is a good woman I always say
(can't wait to see the s#^* storm this creats lol )

That's harsh Rainman. That statement against my ex, I agree. The GF, best thing since sliced bread. All women are not evil and money motivated. Why, just keep the GF in margaritaville and everything is fine!

true that. a single woman is a great woman, she cannot take half when she leaves lol.

nice cars, i have always wanted a tata
-
RE:y88rick I dont understand the tata part?

tenth annev, T/A
-
tenth annev, T/A
GO it now. My bud john told me were one is in s cell msg you know a 400 4/spd tata. I dont know if it is for sale but it might be after i talk with the guy/or girl.
-
dude i dont have the money for a tata, i wish. I do know of one out here that is supposed to be a 23k car with the original motor that is locked up. but the underside isnt too pretty and the guy wants a little too much for it in my opinion.
-
Offer him $20K and break out the easy-off oven cleaner. It'll be shiny underneath!
-
well I meant 23,000 miles. he wants like i think 4g's for it and its not worth it. its rough been sitting outside for a long time. very long time. then there is like a 14,000 mile car for around 20-25 grand that car is very nice.
I do have a friend with one thats a 4spd car but no original motor he put a 455 in it and its a drop dead nice car just doesnt have the embroidery on the seats (they were redone in the period that you could not just go buy the door panels or seats) it is a really nice nice car and he'd take 8 grand for it. however the only way im going to end up with one is this here y82 and 71 would have to go and im not in that position to do so currently.

We have one an hours drive from me . I would really like to get it some how ,but I don't think its going to happen . He wants alot considering the shape its in and over 70,000 miles .If it had the 400 with the 4 speed ,I may have considered close to his 17G asking price

RE:rainman I seen this pic before was it from you,how much is the cat asking.

$17,000 is what rainman said in the last sentence.

Doesn't look too bad I would rather pay 14k, the interior is really clean
-

What he is asking, and what he will take is two different things. rainman i agree on the 4speed if only it was.

OK thanks,

OK thanks,
Yes that is correst . Funny as I met him again recently ,and he claimed he never asked that much . But I remember him clearly telling me that when I was interested .
I didn't ask him again for a price though ,thought there was no point now that I have purchaced the Marty .
I would still like to buy it someday though . I love those TATA's.
-
I have to agree,had 5 of them myself.I sold them all,2 were drivers,3 were builders. 2 out of the 5 were 4/speeds.
-

The cheaper the better ,i say.

I too like the TATA. and the Indy Pace Car TA. I need a garage before I get anything else
Anyways back on topic!!!
Here are my two
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt192/Nexus_wfo/Trans%20Am/P1030587.jpg)
missing is my donar car rotting at my dads place.
"The Project" is the one in the garage, The other one was "Project Rescue" but at this time it is not repairable with out a bigger garage! So for now I will borrow the engine and rear end out of it and steal other parts as I need then for The Project.

Here is my two Trans Am's :) One is a 79 Tenth Anniversary Trans Am, with an olds 403+auto. The car had its original paint when I bought it, although it was in bad condition. The positive side, was that it had NO rust, even though it has been in Norway since 1980. (Im from Norway too :P)
The other car, a 81 Turbo Trans Am, needs some work done to the engine, it doesnt run right, and it gets overheated rather quick :( the body is rather good on it, considering i bought it on eBay for $4500.
-
Frode, you should put the turbo wheels from the 81 onto your TATA and the cragars on your 81. It just seems more fitting, but to each his own.
I love both!

Have to agree with you there, definitely put the turbo rims on the TATA.

Nice car yes :) I actually has considered putting the turbo wheels on the TATA, but then again, I have also thought about snowflakes 17x9 for it :P
Maybe I should start a poll for which rims to use? :)
-
I love the turbo rims, go with those.

Yes that's right its the factory jack, spare, bottle, and jack standand ,jack bar.

4 speed. Car looks great after full body restore. Question, how did you go about breaking the car down to do the restore? I am about to do mine like you did but am trying to figure the best way to break down.

Yes that's right its the factory jack, spare, bottle, and jack standand ,jack bar.

if you have to replace the quarters do this first, but make sure the doors are hung correct first. that way your body lines , line up. take the hood, inner and outer fenders, bumpers, rad core support off then the doors. gas tank next, then I pulled the drive line. motor to rear end out. pulled the gas lines , all brake lines. front and rear wiring off.

Heres my 80 on another glorious sunny day in the UK !

Im still plugging away at it, when i get the time.....
-
i think you already covered this, but what is your seats out of? they seem to fit really nicely with the car?
-
And the rims?
-
THE rear window, spoilers, dash, console, str wheel, and more looks unique.
-
Ok the seats are out of BMW 5 series, the rear window is a Bullnose one, the front flares i made, the steering wheel console etc are all standard Firebird ( i just re did them ) the wheels are 9.5 X 19 on the rear and 8.5 X 19 on the front and if i told you the wheels cost me $100 because they were destined for a European Marque....
This is a pic of when i was building the rear...

All the paint, body, fabrication etc was all carried out by me.
The problems i have here are
1) Im married with kids so MONEY doesnt exist
2) Im the UK so parts can be a nightmare
But on the Upside im blessed to have great friends on here and some that have helped me more than i can ever thank them and also the fact that need, breeds invention.... i fabricate ! ;)
But what gives me the most joy is watching " Trans am " people here in the UK "miss" the various changes on the car, only one guy spotted them all and hes been into Pontiacs for 20 years, have you spotted them? lol. ;D
-
Lets all put our know how together and nip this one in the bud. p.s they need more pics.

RE: ang was that your T/A T/A
I only post pics of cars I have owned..so yes.
I have had 2 ta/ta both l78/w72 cars ...1 I ran to death and cracked the tail on the t-10 and sold for 1500.00 the other still in storage with about 60,000 on clock. They were dogs compared to early stuff...my 76 400 4speed was a way better runner . I even have pics of when we rebuilt the engine in a ta/ta to get a bit more power out of it...did ya know they had a odd GRIND cam in them from the fACTORY??

That was an interesting paint scheme on that TATA :P
-
Brian................where did you get your Gold TA from???? This looks like mine when I owned it back in 1983.
-
That was an interesting paint scheme on that TATA :P
Heh heh, that didn't take long.
Yeah, I thought about it for quite a while but I just didn't want to do a factory style resto. I have the original engine tucked away along with the wheels. I have no intention of selling her so resale value isn't a worry.
I have parked next to a couple of stock TATA's, I am more then happy with my car.
-
You should be, it looks sweet.
-
Rascal - what are the specs on your rims/tires? I like those too...
-
Rascal...Beautiful car!!! I love the paint.
-
Thanks for the kind words guys. Still a bit of work left to do on the girl, but I am happy with the progress.
Rascal - what are the specs on your rims/tires? I like those too...
The wheels are the Year One 17" - stock Silver color too. Front tires are 255/50's, rear's are 275/50's.
-
Rascal good shot's of the T/A That bird has a nice sheen to her. Love looking at those body line's, pic's caught them well.
-
Hey Rascal ,very nice TATA!
I like your tire size to ,its very close to the factory tire height . Any rubbing issues in the front? I was wondering what brand of tires you are using . I am thinking about a 265 50r 17 in the rear ,actually matching the factory tire height exactly .
Thats if they make that size
-
RE: Rascal I think its unique. want my paint to be blk/gld ,just as a true 10th ann is painted, only blk /gld
-
I did have quite a bit of rubbing on the front, but it has more to do with the fact that I have cut springs and it was simply too low for the tire size.
Compounding the problem was that my bump stops were destroyed.
I have new springs on order which I am hoping will raise the front by a good inch, plus they won't be so mushy - mine are shot.
I also replaced the bump stops with ones a bit higher as a temporary fix.
Oh yeah, I changed the bolts that connect the inner fender to the fender - that is what was rubbing and it was tearing up the edge of the sidewall. I used some button head bolts and it has helped alot.
I am hoping that once I have the new springs installed, most of my rubbing will go away.
As for turning rub, at full lock the tire would rub against one of the bolts at the front of the inner fender well. Button head bolts solved that problem too. It was rubbing right in the middle of the tire, so with another inch of height... well it probably still would have rubbed.
I actually wanted to run a 285 out rear but I couldn't find the right sidewall height - either too tall or too low. I really didn't want to go with a shorter sidewall.
-
I like that car :) And I like Transam dave's idea for a black and gold TATA Scheme :)

She doesn't look like this anymore, unfortunately, but there was a time when the only problem was that one droopy headlight. Bought from the original owner's widow in San Jose, CA with 63K on the clock; unrestored and unmolested. And yes, she's a genuine Cali car. With any luck, she'll be up for sale here soon-ish.

Here's a couple more. It had a Chevy 350 but now piecing a 400 together and planning on stroking it. The car's torn apart again after DMV told me anything attached to the car would be taken if the car was reported stolen after I applied for a title.

Luckly the car(shell) VIN came back clean and now I have a title and now I get to put all back together. But plan on getting all the sheet metal repaired and painted before it goes back together.

No, I don't have a power train or brakes installed and the car wanted to roll back.
-
Yeah - that was sort of my point - it looked a little high (no engine) and once it gets to going in your neighborhood ...well, it's gone.
-
how did you get the gold bird emblem on the shifter?
the horn button emblem is the exact same size.

I have to get some sections off my donar car (green one in donar car section) to fix firewall, roof, pillar. No where even close to being as nice as what is being posted, but my time will eventually come.

RE: nexus KEEP up the great work, time is all it takes to make it perfect.

Here's my 79 during its resto, and then during a cruise this last summer.

TinIndian , you did one heck of a job on your restoration . I gotta say I like the looks of white T/A's.
Are you a painter by trade?
-
Thanks Rain Man.
I have been painting since 1984.
Trained in the USAF, painted jets for 4 years,
Worked as a painter for Caterpillar for 8 years
And several bodyshop in between.
After seeing so many, so called "Show car" paint jobs at shows that looked like crap
I decided I would never be happy with someone elses paint work on my own cars.
So now, if it turns out looking like crap, I have no one to blame but myself.
It's funny that you have the color of car that I was very close to using on mine,
but I reconcidered and keep the original Cameo white color.
-
Yup...that's a sharp looking car
-
RE: 1tinindian good you kept it the true color, resale value just went up.

Thanks Rain Man.

I sure wish I had your skills . To me it kinda sucks to hand over 4 to 5G to get a car painted ,when a person could do it himself if he had the skill .And theres no feeling of accomplishment handing it over to someone else . I really don't trust anyone touching the Marty either.
I dabbled a bit on my GMC shorty ,and it made me realize just how hard it really is . I really suck at sanding bondo to ,always remove to much.
The nice thing going for you is , you can take your time and do 10 times the job that any shop would end up doing ,and then you know what you have in the end also ,like no unneccesary bondo .
Thats quite an interesting career you had
So did they take you up for a ride once at least?
-
Nope, I never got the chance to fly.
And you're right, I know what I have, and how well it was done.
My goal was to repaint it to the point where there were no signs of it being a repaint (ie, tape lines, overspray).
The only thing I did over what the factory did, was to make sure I had coverage on all the parts. The insides of the fenders, under the rocker panels, bottom side of the hood were all painted the same amount as the outside of the car was, and I did this more for corrosion protection than for just the looks of it.
Thanks for the kind words guys!
I'd love to do another one, just a 4 speed next time!

I had a 4 speed 81 Z28 ,and what a differance it made . The car takes on a whole differant personality imo . Someday I hope to be able to find and afford a 4 speed T/A. I like 78 and 79 T/A's ,both awesome years

74 T/A (original LS2) sorry chevy guys, pontiac had it first.
keeping this guy stock for the most part w/ the exception of some stiffer springs and shocks from pro-touring F body. I rebuilt the entire driveline and susp. leaving the body stock for now. A blast to drive. I added a DN 5 spd and 2.73 rears for long distance driving and still have off line performance.
78 T/A cornering machine
lots of suspension and driveline upgrades. finishing up wiring then over for final paint.

But it will still resell none the less won't it?

Tranny is still like new and the engine will run but carb and fuel system all gummed up. I have the carb at Cliff Ruggles getting rebuilt and I am replacing the whole fuel system from the tank all the way up. There is sume rust on quarter pannels so i am gonna have the body restored and clean up the carb and engine. The car has just over 20K miles on it.
-
RE:gjdls95 very nice ,ride very nice.I say it's a keeper for sure.Justs my 2 cents.

Thanks transam dave, I plan on keeping it until I'm gone...have told my wife I want to be burried in it but I guess that would be selfish...lol
