i purchased a set of 15x8 snowflake wheels. whats the best size tire for that rim . handling and the right look are more important than a stock appearance. the car is a 81 t/a and it might be lowered a bit.
-
255/60/15 is a great fit at all 4 corners if you aren't going with stock tire size.
-
Yep, I second the 255/60/15 recommendation. Best all around tire size for these cars. If you're wanting a bit more meat out back you can put some 295/50/15s out back, but then you'll need to back the fronts down to 245/60/15 in order to prevent the front tires from being taller than the rears (the 255/60s are about a half inch a taller than the 295/50s... 245/60s are about a tenth of an inch shorter than the 295/50s... so they match up perfect).
All that said... I'd recommend the 255/60s though... like I said, great all around tire.

thanks for the info.
-
good info-- but will 255-70-15 tires be a decent fit for 15x8 snowflakes on a 79 SE ?
Thanks, Davey
-
No, the sidewall on that tire will be too tall.
-
255/70/15 would be over and inch and a half taller than stock and would look terrible and adversely affect handling. Go with the 255/60/15s.
-
thanks guys , think 225/15/70 's were stock size , and that is what is on the car now.......... Dave
-
I could get a great deal on 255/70/15's -- that is why I asked- BFG radial T/A's
-
Yes, 225/70/15 were the stock size. Go with 255/60/15s you'll be very happy.
-
Not to change the subject, but what about tires for 15x7 snowflakes? I know 225/70R15s were stock, but I'm looking for something a bit wider, at least for the rears.
-
255/60/15 will fit fine on a 15x7 as well. Here's a pic of an old car of mine with 255/60s.

damn, i put 245/60's on my 15x8s, i wanted 255s but thought they would rub in the front. i guess the next set will be 255s!

Anybody know where to buy a 255/60R15 in this ...

And no, tire rack doesn't list 'em. Maybe a special order?
-
It was recommnded to me to go with 245x60x15 on the front and 255x60x15 on the back. The 255x60x15s fill out the rear wheel well very nicely with plenty of clearance. Haven't gotten the 245x60x15s on the front yet but they look very nice on the 8" snowflakes. Since they are a bit smaller I'm not expecting to have any clearance issues.
btw - BFG TA Radials all around.
-
275/60/15 is better and only a tenth taller than stock.
-
When I bought my car I had 275/60/15's in the back with 225/60/15's on the front and the rear rubbed really bad. Any reason for that you think? Iwas told they were "way too Big for this Car". So I changed them to215/65/15 all the way around and they look a little small. I guess I shouldn't always listen to the "experts"

On my car I would run the B.F. Goodrich or Firestones before I would run Goodyears, my personal preferance. Past usage shows me those two work well. You can run a 295/50R15 on the rear with the 8" snowflakes.

And yes that is rubber on the rear fender. :-X
