'66 389 in 81 Trans Am?
« on: May 12, 2012, 12:08:26 AM »
So the motor debate goes on in my mind..... How would a 66' GTO 389 motor do as a replacement engine in the 80 Tranny?  I am basically looking for a motor that I can put together myself with minimal help and have turn decent HP.... Like put some rods, rings, pistons, cam etc, but I am not a machinist so I cant machine anything on it.....What motor would be most suitable for that???  350 sbc, 400, 403, 455, 389.......454..............

If the 389 was cheap and good running condition I may go that route. But you have to change mounts and a couple other things. For the bang and $$$ i'd look into a 400 since they are still plentiful and everything needed could probably be sourced right here. Good luck

By thye way...nice to meet you and your family. Super nice folks!

Hi John,
Your first choice is a 70-75 481988 400 block- these have 5 mounting holes per side and will bolt into your Bird. But if these are scarce in your neck of the woods a 65-66 389 is a good choice for a 400 substitute. These can be bored up to .090 over (406 cid), but in most cases you can bore them .060 over and install standard 400 pistons in them. Later model 69-75 11-bolt timing covers can also be used, allowing you to use the more common 67-79 350-455 balancer and 11-bolt water pump. The 65-66 389's also come with predrilled no.2,3, and 4 main caps for a full length windage tray.

The 70-75 350P's and 70-76 455's also have 5 mounting holes per side, and will also bolt into your 80 Bird with the right engine brackets.

Well I made a typo and it's an 81 but the PO had a SBC in it, so the mounting issue will need to be dealth with anyhow.  Like I was saying before I want the most user friendly engine I can put in the car, add a few things that don't take rocket science to do to the engine (cam, headers, intake) and be happy with something over 300hp.

Getting 325-350 hp from a 389/400 is pretty simple IMO- it can be done with or without ported heads, a few different cams, and the tried-and-true combo of a Holley 4160 and Edelbrock performer. Higher compression 400's can make 375-425 hp, but I would avoid these combos if you want the ability to run lower octane gas and and have a very easy tune.

I recently built a 389 for a 65 GTO, and even with a mild Crower 60241 the 389/400 had plenty of power from 1500-5500 rpms, thanks to the no. 11's that were fitted with 2.11/1.77 stainless valves, port-matched and treated to street port job. The block was bored/ honed .060 over, zero decked, align honed, and compression was set to 8.6:1, with Sealed Power forged 400 pistons and 5140 forged replacement rods installed on a standard 400 nodular crank. Exhaust consists of RARE manifolds hooked to a 2 1/2" Pypes system. The mild cam combined with a mid-sized combustion chamber will still make good dynamic compression and require 91 octane, but running a cam with more duration and LSA will let a 400 tolerate lower octane fuel.

Any late model open-chamber D-port head will work on a 389, but the no. 12,13,48, 62, or 670 heads have smaller 72-75cc chambers ansd will make over 10:1 on a 400, requiring 93 and a careful tune to run- 14cc dished pistons will be needed to drop the SCR down to 9.5:1, the max on 91-93 octane. The plus side to running theses heads is that they come with screw-in studs and 2.11/1.77 valves already. The best bolt-on head that will yield a pump-gas friendly 8.7:1 SCR is a 6x-4- it comes also with 2.11/1.66 valves and screw-in studs, and one of the best stock exhaust ports of any regular production Pontiac head.

A set  of 4x-4's (the 98cc version) can be milled .030" to give you 8.7:1 on a .060 389. If the heads have 1.96/1.66 valves, have them opened up to take 2.11/1.77 valves. The 4x's are similar to 6x heads, and will perform well when even mildly ported. 6x-8's are better suited for 455's- the 100-102cc chambers make 9-9.3:1 on 455's or 461 strokers.
