I'm curious to see what everyone has done with their interiors to maybe give some inspiration to those of us who are currently redoing their interiors:
I'll start:
'76

'78
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w119/logikfive/1978%20Trans%20Am/100_8283.jpg)
My '77 is currently under the interior knife, which is mainly why I started this, inspiration to complete the project! :P
Post yours up!

I don't have any real good pics of the interior, but here are a coujple of shots from not *too* long ago. I haven't restored anything...and at the time, it also needed a little cleaning...

no it is gray, interior is still all oringnal except floor mats must be the way the sun was hitting it.
-
George is your cage a " weld in " or " bolt in " and where did you get it from? Cheers Steve

pics of my 78
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w8/yellowbirdx2/MVC-013F-1.jpg)

It's a Hooker Roll Bar, a bolt in.
I also welded in the bottom to the side rails.
The car got stolen, and everything stripped, except for the Roll Bar, they took off the bolts, but didn't chip away the welds.
The car was found 8 hours later, no seats, no t-tops, no .357 magnum, no camera.
Insurance covered the seats and T-tops, but not the other stuff.
Hard to find the Roll Bar now, they pop up every so often on ebay, and everyone goes wild to get them.
I wish I had a few more.

I just found out from Brett that they now make the proper cloth interior that came in my car.... So i am scraping up the cash to have them installed....
Such a wast because the previous owner had just had these BAD covers put on the seats..... Seriouslly.. I hope he got a deal!!!!
Bye bye Velvet looking seats!!

Haven't done a thing to it since I bought it but its in very good shape (think it just needs a little vinyl conditioner and a new carpet to bring it completely back)

Some things you can't see in these pics are the old truck hoods and a trunk lid from an old Chevy that I'm going to cut into the needed firewall, toe boards and rear seat pans.
And then there are some "secret" items I'm keeping under wraps for now. ;)

Hammer... I hate to say this because I believe these cars are intended to be driven, but you have a candidate for "Queeny Trailer Treatment" there!!

Hammer... I hate to say this because I believe these cars are intended to be driven, but you have a candidate for "Queeny Trailer Treatment" there!!
Buddy.....I drive it! I don't own a trailer. I bought it with just 20,900 miles on her 6 years ago. I've driven it to Michigan quite a few times and to the Trans Am Nationals every year since I've owned it from Cleveland to Dayton. I just drive her very rarely. The car is mostly original as I have had some touch up work on her done and the complete hood repainted with the addition of a new hoodbird. The interior however....is original in every way except for the tranny gauge in the console. I did re-dye one rear panel due to sun fade.
Sorry but my girl is not a trailer queen.....and I do take pride in driving her. I enjoy it as often as I want. Just not every day and mostly when the Ohio Firebirds get together. They are all a riot!
Hammer
P.S. The pictures don't really do the beauty of the interior justice. Oh I have flaws, but not many.
You're offically my new HERO! Agreed they were made to be driven...... I must admit I would not have the stones to drive something that collectable/valuable! One ding or something and I would flip my wig........
She's a beauty.... never saw photos of the interior prior to this post.... WOW!

Thanks. I have recieved a few PM about my doors on page 2 of this topic and who made them or where they came from. Thought Id just post it here that I made them along with the rest of the interior such as seats and etc. I do auto uphosltery for a living.
As far as the above question about what I started with, here are a few pics of the car when I bought it. ( Hope this is not taking the thread too far off track here.)

Only wet dog? That's no too bad. Wait until you get a car that was called home by a family of medium sized rodents.

You know, Larry -- if you'd quit feeding your cat Aimee's birds and the banana bread *maybe* it'd take an interest in those little rodents and relieve you of that problem... :o :D ;)

And unless I miss my bet, those are door panels that will never be replaced or reconditioned for that very reason! ;)

There may be other reasons but the distinct ridge down the center of the shaker identifies it as a early '77 shaker.

Ya, but they weren't that low.... were they? I don't remember seeing the '77's at the Nationals being that low.
Yep, Rich -- back in the day those were that low...and a real turnoff for some of us. After looking at the rounded shaker from 70-76, and then looking at the truncated shaker with no way to open it short of cutting it up, it was kind of distressing for us TA lovers. I remember it was part of the restyling that I didn't like at all. :-\ :-\

And as you can see in that pic (taken when I bought the car) my original unmodified 77 shaker was that low as well (dec 76 build car)
-
Your cars are RIGHT HOOKERS, did you guys in Aus get them that way? Its very unusual to get a Right hand drive here in the UK but not unknown, but ive never seen a RHD T/A before.

Wow, looking at Leigh's pics I see the shaker is also very low as well. Can't even read the letters :o . Huh, don't mean to be difficult but I would have swore they were higher! Oh well, don't mean to steal the thread either just having a hard time believing the shaker is that low!
-
I was thinking it was just the early '77 scoops that were that low. But Leigh's is a later scoop. ???
Hey Leigh! I fixed your pics bud! Someone flipped them around backwards.
But what's up with your gauges?
And where's the gas pedal in your '77? :o

-
Much better Larry, thanks!
-
Leigh,
Why does the scoop on the 77 say 3rtil d.d???? 8)
Rich,
when dad brought the 77 home, my brother has his 73 Brewster green 455 and an AB 74 400, so it REALLY looked weird since there were not a lot of 77s around yet.... and it didn't WOOP as loud when you hit the gas.
The biggest difference in sound I ever had was when I had C&C tops cut inot my 76... first time I stood on it I nearly wet myself.... gas mileage was really bad for a couple weeks......
-
I was thinking it was just the early '77 scoops that were that low. But Leigh's is a later scoop. ???
It was just early '77 production models...Leigh's is early '77 with a build date of Dec. '76.

Ok, I just can't see the ridge down his scoop.

Another RHD version, this is my 78 Formula. Originally a camel tan deluxe interior it is now Safron Leather trimmed.

Wow, that is nice!! I take it that was done locally?
Another RHD version, this is my 78 Formula. Originally a camel tan deluxe interior it is now Safron Leather trimmed.
-
Thats correct, the RHD conversion done some time in the last 30 years and the retrim done by a previous owner. It is 'original' style in looks but not a dead copy of how the factory trimmed the seats which is slightly annoying!
-
So is there many right hand drive T/A's in Aus?
Your previous piccies had been messed with to make em look like left hookers.
Do they make good money your way?
-
Generally, they are all RHD converted if you want to be able to drive them in nearly all states. This is at least until recent years where there is a 30 years and older ruling for classic cars that can be driven as LHD on the roads.
-
No way, i suppose that makes us lucky here in the UK, we can drive them as left hookers without any grief ( well apart from drive throughs and anything else thats catered for RHD's )
That looks like a factory conversion, the dash etc, is that how they came into AUS?
Oh Larry, i think you should swap the piccies back! LOL ;D ;)

Thanks for the thumbs up, eroc022. I always wondered why the dash and console didn't match the rest of the interior, but I like the brown also.
-
That is the first time I've ever seen the dark brown dash and console. While I don't think I'd like an interior that was all that color I do like the two tone.

Part of my interior lol
So now try to imagine what it look like in your head lol

Well this is what my interior currently looks like; a lot of work ahead but not a priority (car must ran first).

Are they?

@WarbirdTA
you are right! that's recaro seat's.

W72Transamowner: "I need your interior for my car......wouldn't want to help a guy out would ya?"
Would almost consider it for a nice dash. The pillars are blocking the view of some nice dash cracks thanks to the Florida sun. I eagerly await the release of the trans am dash..... any day now.
-
Kudos to Lee01 on the homemade dash repair - looks great. These are all great examples of what truely separated the Trans Am from the Camaro (laugh, chuckle) Mustangs of the era!
-
They have been released...just on back-order. Have you ordered one yet?
-
Florian142,
In case you didn't know, I love Recaros!
I have them in two of our cars!
Very nice, and match your interior very well.

Some before and afters of my 1970 Trans Am interior. I replaced the door panels but there seems to be no aftermarket Firebird lowers...only Camaro :( So I used what was available. I installed new carpet, seat belts, rear deck, radio, dash cover, cleaned the dash panel and guages, and repainted the kick panels, and all the trim. I was luck with the seat covers and headliner...they look good to me so no replacement was needed.

King,
Your interior looks great! Did you buy a new steering wheel or was yours restored?
Thanks,
Pat
-
Pat,
I bought that steering wheell in the pictures. It is not the original leather wrapped wheel...but I have the original sitting on a shelf in my garage. I will probably get the original restored at some point...maybe. DO yo uhave a 70 TA?
Glad you like it :)

I have 72 T/A that I'm restoring and I would like to get my wheel restored! But not sure who can do it? I check with Gary's (they restored the wheel on my 68 Charger) but they do hard plastic wheels only.
Thanks

There's an outfit on eBay that offers a pretty nice service, but they're not 100% correct in that they make a nicer wheel than the factory offered. You have to send yours to them as a core. There product sure looks nice from the pics and I think somebody either here or on TAC has used them. :-\
-
Rick is right...I have their contact info if needed. They wrap the wheel in leather...looks good, but it's not factory "correct".
-
Jeff, Please post the info! I will send them another wheel and save the original.
Thanks Rick & Jeff
Pat

Give me a minute to find and I'll PM it to you ;)
-
Pat,
Nice garage...looks like you have a good selection of cars in your arsenal. I was able to restore a 1959 Ford PU with my Dad when I was young...about 20-25 years ago and I will never forget it. Good luck feel free to PM if you have any questions. I may also be able to help get some parts if you need them.

Nice looking interior, limey! :) :)
-
Beautiful :o Is that the original upholstery or repro covers?
Stunning interior either way.
-
Thanks guys, repro covers, dash cover. Pretty much all been replaced. Working on the little 194 lights and bayonets to get a little more light on my dash. Most of my bayonets are dry and cracking. Anyhow, sure do enjoy looking at everyones cars! ;D
-
Nice interior Limey did you do the restoration? By the way, you can put those images into one post instead of many posts. Saves ya a little more time ;)
-
No, I can't take credit for the interior. I have done a little work on it, but the majority was done by the previous owner. I tried to post all the pictures on one post, but it said the file was too large. I'm sure its something I'm doing wrong ???

Don't sweat it.
Thanks for the info...I was curious as those seats are beautiful.

Looks great Adinirac - I still have the origonal matching dealer mats for mine but they're starting to show their age so I tried to leave them out of the pics!
I have a question - Is the bird emblem on door panel just to cover up where the window crank would be on the non-power option cars like mine?

Yup. They came from the factory that way. I believe on the SE cars they were gold trimmed?
I'm hoping to get the car out into the sun this weekend and do better pictures of the whole car.

Man so much creativity! That's what I love about checking out all you guys' work. This is a great place to come to see the quality of work that some of you guys put into your cars. I love how the interiors are tastefully customized.
Aus78formula, what can I say.....That leather trim just sets off the interior of your car. Absolutely stunning. Beauitifully done!
79SE the camel tan in your car is beautiful. My favorite stock T/A interior was in the camel tan 79 Y84 SE interior. Very nice. I remember when I was looking for a 79 on the Pontiac dealers lot back in the day, I saw one of the black 79 SE's with the camel interior and just loved it. Your interior takes me right back to that day. Thanks!
I've posted a couple of these before, but here's a few shots of my y88 interior. Mine's pretty plain and basic and not much in it that really pops like some of the others. Like someone else said, I'd even call it a little boring. I never thought much about changing anything in it but the sound system, but I gotta tell ya, you guys have inspired me to really think about the possibilities.

OK it took a while but I have finally finished all the interior work on the 79. I redyed the rear panels, door armrests, console and kick panels. I also installed new door panels and window felts (supplied from Brett), and last summer new carpet and new seat covers. I also cleaned up the bezel using Mr Clean Magic Eraser.
So onto the pics. ;D

Check with NPD...I recently bought a set of black GM (repro) rubber mats (4 piece set...approx. $100.) from them...very nice quality.

That dark blue looks pretty sharp.

I agree. The blue interior is very nice. And you really don't see it very often.
-
thanks guys for your comments. I was told by a firebird guru up here that the dark blue interior was rare, but i have seen 3 of them in the last year already, not so sure it was rare. I know back in 1981 most of the formulas that sold around these parts had the white and blue exterior and dark blue interior. Thought I would post it though as i didn't see any other dark blue ons posted yet.
Rob
PS Brett those door panels worked excellent. thanks!!

That's very nice, Matt -- I'm impressed! What are you planning for floormats? Also, what happened to the RTS emblem? Did one of the mounting posts shear off? ???
(just asking, not trying to nitpick -- honest!)

Rick,
How do you keep it looking so good??
My TA had white but I changed it over in the 80s.
The white sail panels got all chalky and dry rot. The white turned yellowish in places on the vinyl too.
-
It's been primarily garaged for its entire life, although it was used for a DD during the late 80s so it sat outside during that period. The interior hard plastics haven't started chalking yet, but they have yellowed a bit. The vinyl shows some wear although it cleans up good. The dash and such is perfect.
How do I keep it clean? Lotsa lotsa work. That car has been started in my underwear (sometimes less) many times over the years after I'd worked on it and needed to crank it over to check something. That's another reason I don't have windows in my garage -- what happens in my garage, stays in my garage... :o :D :D
-
Boxers or briefs? :o
Original?????? That is great!
I love a nice white interior. It was popular in the 70s. Just hard to keep it nice over the years. That makes yours so rare.
You could leave it out on a hot sunny day and you would not burn your hinney, especially if you are wearing only undies! :o
I would love to go for a ride with you some day but I would not be willing to drop trow.
Do you have racing strips?? ..on the car that is,........not the underwear.
Thanks,
Jeff
-

LOL! Nope, I try for the highest possible standards of personal hygiene! :D :D ;) OH -- the car -- nah, it's a plain-hood (no bird) version -- 1975, the Rodney Dangerfield of TAs. :) :)

Looks pretty nifty nonetheless! It's soooooo much easier keeping a black interior clean -- especially the seats! ;)
Rick ---> who subsequently has bought cars with BLACK interiors...
-
I really would like the deluxe but I just retored the standard. I will leave it as is for now. The deluxe parts I have seen are in far worse shape.
Rick,
I just went out in the garage, closed the door and sat in the car in my briefs. Wow, nice! I see what you mean. ;)
maybe this should have been a private mesage. :-X

You two are officially banned :D :D :D

Don't knock it till you try it!

Take another look at the picture...does she look like she needs one? :D :D

Hey -- you gotta have something to TALK about! ;)

Did you look at that pic?
-
Ah, you guys are missing the flavor of life. It's like the difference between savoring a fine liquor and just guzzling great quantities of whichever beer is cheapest. You can end up snockered either way, but the former is a lot more equisite than the latter. ;D
Rick ---> who really likes to ENJOY life... ;)
-
:o :o :oBrittany?? :o :o :-*
Who is she? where does she live?
I want to take her for a ride in my TA and maybe marry her soon after that. ;D :D ;) :-* :-*

Yes it needs a vacuum and some floor mats.... I left the birds off the door as I like the cleaner look and the refinished birds I did are not up to my standards, they can always be installed at a later date.

Noticed that your console doesn't have a map pocket in it. Is that an aftermarket unit, or is that an option delete or something? Just curious.

That's an 81 thing. That's where they put the computers. The '80's also got the computer back there but I believe they just got a blockoff plate instead of an entirely new console.

With me going with a white interior, thats the color I'd REALLY like to do mine in, acutally. I never really LIKED a black interior, but with repo pieces all seeming to come in black, it seems the most practical. :(
Gunner
-
Gunner, ud really like to do yours in Camel Tan? my dash and plastic parts were "re-dyed" by the previous owner and it wasnt the correct tan. im happy w/ it for now. but i need some new seat covers eventually. for the moment, im just gonna get some slip-over covers and do that.
Mike
-
my dash and plastic parts were "re-dyed" by the previous owner and it wasnt the correct tan.
What is the interior trim code # on your '80?
The current pix looks closer to Oyster than Camel(dash/console)...
-
I like the Oyster myself...............I have tan right now (among other various colors), and as I said, I don't like black much, but it's more practical than anything else.
Gunner
-
as i said, it was originally camel tan. but the guy i bought the car from used a spray dye and its a tan-ish color. its not the color i like. i actually prefer the camel tan. but im on a tight budget. so interior comes last.
Mike
-
Ok, I get it...I like the Camel best also...but I have to say the color you have now is a nice interior shade (if he had sprayed it better ;) )
-
yeah to some things it stuck great and others not so much. he did managae to get overspray on the read window. thats gonna suck to get off w/ my rear defrost. Hammer, i just got a door sill plate. its not perfect, we went to Pick N Pull and they had an 81 camaro that i pulled the sill plate outta. i also got an outside door handle in GREAt shape. the door sill has a little rust on it but its no big deal. i got both parts for $2.15. MUCH better than going through a parts supplier ;D

Nice interior Tin! I like the EQ in the map pocket that looks like it came from the factory that way. Very tastefully done. You obviously take pride with the interior of the car. May I ask what type of radio that is? Everything else is perfect......even the die on the keyring! LOL
Hammer
Thanks.
The radio is a Sony, but I plan on replacing it with my factory AM/FM/CB radio, and put a CD player in where the EQ is.

Here's mine, seats are coming in this weekend.
Hammer, your car looks awesome. It looks brand new, I do not even have any words to say how good it looks. ;D Maybe someday I could see it in person. I am going to try to make it to the nationals next year from Texas.
Also redryed my steering wheel it came out very good, had to put about 50 coats of dye and two clear coats.

Thanks Hammer, there is not many web sites down here in houston for Trans Am's. This web site has been the only thing keep me going to finish my car. I have learned so much from all the good people here at this web site.
Thanks to all that have helped me in getting my car back together. Tomorrow will be one year since I got my car in boxes. I am looking to get another 79 4speed SE project car for my next build.
-
Nothing has been changed or upgraded. Would like refinish the steering wheel this winter and perhaps work some cup holders into the console.

Very nice interior.....I've given it a good look and noticed the sunglasses and the bird on the console. It looks really really nice. You plan to clean the floor mats to get those stains out? LOL (jk) As mine look the same but I clean mine for shows.
Hammer
yeah, i actually will be putting in a new console in soon. (the bird on it is covering a crack) i'm also getting a new rug too when i get a new console. i actually re-did my whole interior except those two things. its kinda like, those things that you dont get around to finishing. LOL
i re-upholstered the seats myself too. very easy.
-
i'm also getting a new rug too
You've got a full head of hair.......what do you need a new rug for? (jk)
You did the seats nicely. Recovering seats are hard to do without steam and it looks like they came out nicely (not an easy job either, I know). I am sure the rest will come out great. Take some post pictures when your complete.
Hammer
i have a few more pics on my computer. i have to find them. i re-did my whole interior 5 years ago. except for the rug and console because i ran out of cash at the time, and since then i just never got around to doing it, but i plan on doing that this coming winter. then she'll be good as new. well, almost. LOL

I gotta say the third post on this thread with the black and white interior is sweet . I have never seen one like that for real ,just in pics. I think they look pretty sharp.
I like the facotry look personally . Hopefully I can get collector plates in the spring. I just wish I never lost my Bony M 8 track tape is all .
