Emergency brake cable position

Hey guys, I took my car ( 1978 Trans Am 400 Auto) in to get saftied and they said it wouldn't pass cause the e brake cable is touching the exhaust. My cable does a diagonal from the drivers side front to the passenger side rear and it sits right up against the exhaust. Is there usually some shielding or something in place to prevent the cable from burning?
