Additional information needed on the dash cap............
« on: December 17, 2010, 05:56:14 PM »
The grain?

What should one look for when buying a dash cap?

I forgot the name of the grain that is supposed to be on the cap?

Ahhh, thank you Jeff!

Some do not state the grain, so I don't know how one would know unless you get a sample, eh?

This guy on eBay specifically states that his dash caps are the original "hair cell" grain. Turn your volume down, because he has a loud audio speech on his listing. He has them in black or in other colors too. Here's his listing for a black one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dash-Pad-Cap-Overlay-Black-Workmanship-Warranty-70-81-F-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQfitsZYearQ3a1981Q7cSubmodelQ3aTransQ20AmQQhashZitem20b5f72b2dQQitemZ140491828013QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Anyone used this guy?  Or if you bought one from someone else, would you mind sharing?

Heidi,

Sorry can't comment on actual quality BUT from what I've read from other guys here who have used caps...make sure you buy some extra adhesive to adhere the cap to your dash. Seems companies skimp in that area and it may cause it to lift over time.

I don't recall seeing pictures of your dash. How bad is it? Depending on how bad it is, you may be able to get away with filling a minor blemish and redying it. There's a very good post on this site about doing just that.

I believe "4SPEED" has the hair cell cap from that guy on his white 79.

thats the one I have.  the fit is nice ( for a cap)

you only put the adhesive around the border opening and around the a/c holes, glove box, stuff like that.  the adhesive that came with mine was enough to install it.    if you put adhesive all over the dash it voids the warranty as it could crack from sun expansion.

I set mine in the sun for a few hr's to get it really soft.

remember it just a fix , and there is nothing better then the real thing

I just installed a black cap from Classic Industries on my 79' T/A. I already had the dash pulled, so the cap went on pretty easily. Upon reinstalling the dash though, I found that the cap did stick up about 1/8-1/6 of an inch higher than the original dash. This means that it can BARELY be seen when standing outside of the car. The cap is much harder than the original dash, but it is very nice. You will need to buy more adhesive. They give you about 1/10 as much as you will need. My dash has been in the car for about a month now, but the cap has been on for more than three times that. Its still looking great.
