1980 Exxon Valdez TurboTA!!!!
« on: October 13, 2009, 10:23:03 AM »
I have a 1980 - 301 TTA with a confirmed rear seal leak. Reading many, many posts it seems that everyone has 4 different opinions on what seal to go with.
"Oil Can" as I call her, has 22,302 miles on it and was garaged for 27 years so im guessing it simply dried out. Normal driving it simply drips but when I light up all three Turbo lights, it  blows out the seal onto the exhaust causing a cool cloud to pass me when I stop! I have renamed the Turbo lights to the oil leak lights.

I am getting the following opinions and am not confused what to go with now.

1: Use replacement rope seal only "low miles, low wear"
2: bop brand viton rubber seal
3: GraphTite seal (from DCI)
4: Combination of 2 of the above

Your opinion?

Also, any takers on replacing it or know good mechanics in Atlanta/North Georgia?? I hear it requires a motor pull and my apartment management may frown on that.

Welcome to 78TA! ;)

I guess I'd ask if all the oil is being burned off the exhaust manifold, or if any of it is being burned in the engine.  I'm not a turbo guy at all, but from what I understand if the turbo gets worn it will start sucking oil into the engine.  It may be time for a turbo rebuild, which stops that problem if you have it.

We use the BOP "Viton" seal (the "other" is a knock-off, NOT Viton, and tries to capitalize on BOP's fine work) in aftermarket blocks or with aftermarket cranks wih no serations. If it doesn't SAY "BOP", it isn't.

For a factory block, since the seal groove is not "close tolerance", it can be far out-of-round, so we use ONLY the GraphTite seal. We've used the BOP with some success, but also with some problems. We have yet to have a graphite seal leak.

We biult a "warmed up" 301T last year. GraphTite seal. No issues.
